what are the cone-like things on my magnolia. they have red seed looking things?

can i leave fallen leaves on the ground to work like mulch?

    If it looks like this it is a seed pod. My relatives in the country keep the old leaves under the umbrella of the tree. It was got so big they sat under it for shade in the Summer.
