I have very dark brown kitchen cupboards and want to paint them.

What color would be a good choice? The rest of the kitchen is off white and does not matter if it is changed. Also, what can be used to get rid of the tacky feeling on the cupboards?

I'd stay with the off-white or cream, get color swatches from your paint supply store to match them, I think white would clash too much and make the other things look dull. Add accents of color, like red, deep blues or copper pieces to brighten it up (those can be moved around, thrown away or added to in the years to come.) Let us know what you decide!

They have a kit at the local hardware store called rustolem kitchen cabinet restoration. There are quit a few opinions of colors on the back that they will mix for you. I have used the kit a few times my self and its amazing it only requires lite sanding so I finished the entire kitchen in 1day

How about you paint the rest of the room either darkish blue and the cabinets white like a nautical look or go modern and paint the room a reddish color and white cabinets or even black cabinets so many variations you could do even yellow and black etc let me know what you think

Or another idea would be either paint the walls or wallpaper the walls using faux finishes either a knotty pine look like in log cabins and go with a lighter brown shade for the cabinets and fix them up to look like they belong in a log cabin by adding hinges and door handles to match the look

I painted my kitchen cabinets a dark, pine color. My walls are off-white. I like it very much.

Use a cleaner that degreases and sand them. Mine were so bad we sanded all the original stain off and went down to bare wood. Hope you don't have to go that far! Grey is very in now and would look great with off white if you are looking for a neutral look.

A good cleaning is the first step, for sure. Maybe use a fine steel wool with the cleaner as that sticky finish is tough to remove. Personally, I'd go with a soft white/creamy white and either paint or wallpaper the walls.
