DIY Curtain Rods for under $5

I am always surprised at how expensive curtain rods can be. Ikea tends to have the best prices for them, but their selection is very slim. So, we decided to try our hand at making our own.

We purchased electrical conduit at our local home improvement store for $1.67 for a 10 foot rod that was one-half inch in diameter...

Found the knobs and brackets cheap at a second-hand store.

Electrical conduit works great for the rods. It cuts easily with a hack saw.

Those are awesome Melissa. I've made mine own before, but from unfinished wood finials and brackets and closet dowel rods. It's more expensive then your way, but way less expensive the finished wooden rods, finials and brackets are.

They do make for very nice looking rods. Hubby and I are big wood lovers too. I'll have to share that sometime. I thought I had a picture on my computer, but I must have deleted it.

I'll try and find time to take pictures tomorrow or soon. We've a busy weekend ahead of us with work around the house and trying to get a few more days boating before it gets too cold.

How did you secure the finials into the rod? Love the idea.

Hi Debbie, the finials were the screw-on type so we cut a tiny block of wood to fit into the rod. Once wedged in, we drilled a hole that the finials screwed right into. It worked great!
