How to furnish a small oblong room

I have a small oblong lounge about 6ft by 12ft, it is very dark in the winter, a large picture window takes up a 6ft side, there is a door on the left (facing the window), a fire place in the middle on right side, open passage at the end of lounge area, and brown carpet.

Picture would be helpful. I'd check to see if there is hardwood under the carpet and get it refinished in honey gloss finish if there is. Or, if not, replace it with lighter floor covering. Is the 6 ft width measured to the fireplace or to the wall? That is, does the fireplace protrude so you have a space only say 4 ft in front of it? Could you place a couple of smaller scaled chairs on either side of the fireplace ? A smaller area rug in front? A small table beside one of the chairs? Perhaps a mirror to reflect the area? Interesting art/pic arrangement? Does the fireplace have a mantle? Think the idea is to minimize or break up the length of this area.

Thank you for your helpful ideas, I like the idea of a mirror. I will try and get a picture up.

If the carpet is dark brown I agree to remove it if you are the owner and not renting. Do you have window coverings? If you have a heavier drapes, open up and place a sheer behind. Do you have anything you plan to put in room? A little more information would help some and as Marion mentioned a picture would be great.
