Homemade Advent Calendar

We always have an Advent calendar for our kids and this year, I made one from things I had picked up at yard sales this past summer.
The "base" of the Advent calendar was an old bottle crate. It is perfect because it has 24 compartments.
I also scored a bag of these cute, little boxes at a sale for 50 cents. At the time, I didn't know what I would do with them, but I couldn't pass up the bag for that price.
When I was thinking about the Advent calendar this year, I started "shopping" my stash of things and these two items fit perfect together. The boxes were a great fit for the crate.
I filled some of the boxes with little trinkets, but most of the boxes are filled with homemade "coupons"; handwritten notes of things we can do as a family during the season (watch a Christmas movie, make an ornament, string popcorn on the tree, etc.)
I added some washi tape and some stamped numbers to the front of the boxes. I also white-washed the crate so it stood out a little more. I LOVE HOW THIS ADVENT CALENDAR turned out! You can see more of how I did this on my blog!
