Suggestions for painting melamine?

I have one of those over the toilet shelving units that is white melamine. I'd really like to paint it, but my husband, who is pretty handy, says not to. He said it's dangerous to sand b/c of the particles it creates, but I don't think paint would stick to it unless it was roughed up. I have seen several warnings about sanding melamine, so I'm not about to try it. I just wondered if anyone out there has successfully painted it? Or do I need to just look for something different?

They have some spray paint now that supposed to paint plastic, I'd try that. I'd clean it well and take it outside to paint it. I wouldn't sand it, shouldn't be necessary.

I recently painted melamine and had good results. I used a special melamine primer, and it gave a kind of 'chalky' finish. I then painted over it with ordinary paint, and was delighted with the result. I did not do any sanding at all.

I know this is an old post, but I lightly scuff up melamine/laminate with steel wool and liquid sandpaper (deglosser), then wipe with a wet damp rag, prime and paint...works very well.
