So much nice color in September. I love all the colors in my yard in the spring, but I don't have much for the rest of the year. Must rectify that. -
Your're right, Steve, there are many flowering shrubs and plants that will make your yard almost as colorful in Fall as in Spring! -
For Fall : anemones, callicarpa (beautyberry) shrub, caryopteris (blue mist) shrub, asters, alliums, sweet autumn clematis vine, sedums, ironweed, hydrangea paniculata, Knockout Roses, liriope, perennial ageratum - to name just a few! -
The blooms on those sedum are beautiful, Barb. They must be happy. -
You're right, Douglas, the minute our nights cooled off, they popped right out! -
Barb, your plants are so lovely - do you ever fail? I tried growing dragon blood sedum from seeds. 5000 seeds = 4 little tiny plants. After seeing yours I've decided I might try buying plants, not seeds and maybe planting in fall or winter in Florida? -
Oh, my yes, Sherrie! But the bodies are buried in the compost heap : ) In my experience, I have had better luck propagating sedums from its leaves and from divisions from friends. -
I'm not sure if sedums will even grow here. Maybe the seeds were bad. I put ugly plants in my plant cemetery and many times they turn beautiful & are returned to my yard. -
Nothing like a good Lazarus plant : ) -
Good answer Barb - it really made me smile. -
Sherrie, yes, you can grow both showy Sedums, like "Autumn Joy," and ground-cover types, like Sedum acre "Goldmoss", in our part of Florida. -
Douglas, my sedum failure was Dragon Blood Sedum. I still have 4 out of 5000 seeds that are alive so maybe I'll get to see what it looks like. -
Oh, I only had 500 seeds, not 5000 - but the failure rate is outstanding. -
Sherrie S : I've never tried growing them from seed, and your experience does not encourage me to try. -
Me neither, Sherrie! My friends and I all buy different varieties and share divisions - much faster that way too : ) -
Douglas & Barb, I didn't find any locally & wanted Dragon Blood Sedum so I bought the seeds on the internet. I won't try that again. Douglas remember the pretty pink Mimosa that grew like a weed until I decided I had to kill it. Win some lose some - but have fun. -
Sherrie ~ try Bluestone Perennials on-line, they have reasonably priced small plants and quick delivery. -
So true, Sherrie! -
Barb, I will check out Bluestone but won't be buying anymore plants till spring. Thank you for the suggestion.
