If you are buying stoneware used (or anything) it's always a good Idea to give it a good scrub, but don't shy away from that stoneware. Folks need to realize that stoneware is a bit like cast iron in that "the uglier it looks the better it cooks" it needs to get "seasoned" and because stoneware is poris it's best before cooking so as to make it non-stick. Rub with oil and bake at first ...those dark spots are (normally) just where there was a bit more oils in the food. And remember NEVER use dish soap on them.
