Hallway Transformation
Rustic neutral hallway transformation by JST Design.
This hallway which leads to our garage, bathroom and the backyard had not been touched since we moved in, the only thing that we had finished in the hallway was priming the walls with Kilz primer paint to get rid of the smokey smell from the previous owners. Here are the progress photos of our hallway from when we first moved, not a very exciting space I know. You can see my paint chips taped to the wall in the photo, believe it or not white is a very hard colour to chose, there are so many different types of white. It took me a long time to make my final decision and then when I got to the store I was second guessing myself, but in the end I was very pleased with my choice and how the colour turned out. I highly recommend bringing samples home when choosing any colour and seeing what the colour looks like at different times of the day, because the lighting makes a huge difference!
To provide storage for coats and bags, I made a coat rack using an old piece of barn board and some black hooks. I added these old apple crates stacked on top of each other along the wall to store some shoes in. Eventually I would like to incorporate a bench here instead, but that will have to wait until I can decide on the prefect design.
To start the hallway transformation, I began by painting all of the trim white. Then I painted the walls with SICO paints “Pure White” in a cashmere finish. For the three doors in the hallway I chose to use SICO paints “Grand Piano” black in a satin finish using a mohair roller. This gave me the high contrast that I was looking for and also kept the space looking very clean. I had been loving the black door trend and now after doing this hallway I am fully on board! To finish updating the doors I also painted the door knobs black and I am loving how they they turned, I will share all the details on how to update your hardware in a full tutorial soon.
I know what you're thinking, your seeing a little holiday decor creeping into the hallway! I couldn’t help it, I have to admit the Christmas boxes might be coming upstairs this weekend! What do you think of my simple mason jar Christmas candle holders though? It’s actually potpourri at the bottom of the mason jars and it smells so good, like the holidays!
Above is the barn board coat hooks that I made, adorning one of my scarves and this adorable red lantern that we had used in our engagement photos. Below is an image looking at the other side of the hallway, sorry for the weird angles, but hallways are not easy to photograph I quickly learned while doing this! As some of you may have seen last week, this is my DIY felt wreath that I used to add some colour to the space, framing it with the chalkboard that was already here.
