I have country yellow & country blue DR chairs to white distress

I have painted country yellow and country blue dining room chairs that I want to repaint to a white distressed look. Please help. Do I need to sand off yellow and blue paint first? Next step, paint and distress? What type of paint should I use? Thanks in advance for help :) Jayne from Orlando
