i just had a mason at our house to repair our chimney. I asked him how to clean our brick fireplace. His recommendation is to buy a mason detergent to clean brick and grout. Not sure of the exact name. I called the stores he recommended asking if they sell something like that and they said yes. I have not bought the product yet. I do know the specialty stores that sell bricks and limestone sell detergents. He did say never to use muriatic acid since it is highly corrosive.

If you want to know how by someone who would know contact this man. He is great his tips are so on the spot. I've contacted him on many things and he always has the answer and his answers work. You might have to look here due to holidays but you can also call him and they( his store can help you find what you need) . You can never go wrong with him he has a hardware store and goes to all the shows and only recommends what he has found in products that works like it says. http://www.happyhandyman.com/category-s/1826.htm
