End Of Summer Home Maintenance - What To Do Before It's COLD!

It's a little chilly in Atlanta today, but not too late to prep your home for the cold weather to come! Check out these important & specific tips on what to do inside & out! http://bit.ly/9bb9pR Questions? Just ask!OUTSIDE -Check the exterior of your home for problems that should be repaired before winter. Make sure the outside walls of your home are free of debris. Lumber, ladders, or toys stacked against the house can attract spiders, mice, and insects. As colder weather arrives, these pests have incentive to enter the warmth of your house. -If you stock firewood for the winter, something we don't do too much in the south, don't stack it against the house. Besides attracting wood-boring insects and other pests, it can prevent air circulation and trap moisture against the house. This can rot siding or trim. Store firewood 2 feet from the house and elevate it 18 inches above the ground.INSIDE -Hot water tanks have a safety feature called a pressure release valve. If the pressure in the tank gets too great, this valve allows hot water to escape to keep the tank from exploding. Test this valve yearly for proper function. -Cover your water heater with a fiberglass insulation blanket to retain heat, particularly if you have an older water heater that has less-efficient built-in insulation. Do not cover heater controls.Read More! - http://bit.ly/9bb9pR

Thanks for the reminders. I always think of this stuff too late - like the first snow. I guess I'm in denial that summer is over.

Thanks for the information. When you're the single mom or women living alone we don't always know to do these things or how to do them. Thank YOU!

You are all very welcome; thanks for the great feedback! Most of us, single moms especially, have too many important things to think about. But it's so very true that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!We too are slightly in denial that it's already time to talk about cold weather...

AK, I want to thank you even though it doesn't get too cold here. There are things you brought up that everyone should do.

I just did that today in fact i closed all the vents and insulated them so no frozen pipes( I hate when that happens ) I know we will have more warm weather but it could get cold before u know it and then its too late. I also while its warm enough to be outside without a jacket I put up Christmas lights I dont turn them on until its appropriate but they will be up before it gets too cold

Great tips! Thanks for sharing. Don't forget to clean your chimney of creosote buildup, or if you have cracks in the flue you may need a chimney liner :)
