Advice on best kind of new flooring for downstairs, 38 yr old house

Our whole downstairs needs new flooring, entry, LR,DR, kitchen, fam room, powder room. We plan to move in 6 years, so we want something that would have the most appeal for resale, but we don't want to break the bank since we will be leaving. Ideas? Thanks.

  • I would go to model homes in your area and see what flooring they are using. There are some very nice engineered and laminate floorings that are not that expensive and if you check out the closeouts and end of year sales, you may find a really good deal. Carpet can be a good thing in family rooms and LR but go for the laminate or higher end laminates in kitchen. If you go with laminate and engineered flooring (that is wood but just not hardwood and it is pre stained) you can do this yourself in a few weekends taking one room at a time. good luck

Well it depends on how long you want the floors to last, how long you plan on living there and how much do you want to spend. I've had real wood floors( pine ship pap) not fancy stuff but it was and is also called tounge and groove. Love it yes it is soft but stain it and use varnish on it and it will last forever and take a beating. (I beat mine first so it would look old kind of like the new stuff they called hand scraped.) It wasn't hard to do at all. Then the new house I just got I have tile 18x18 down everywhere. Yep and love it too so would do either again in a minute . There again will last till I die and is so easy to keep clean just like my old wood one was. Again wasn't expensive but will last. My daughter is on her 3rd engineered floor in 17 years so what does that say about that stuff( just paper coating on top of wood won't last for many years). The stuff is to expensive for what you get. Just my thought contact me if you need nay questions answered.

Thanks, we are thinking of tile in the entry and kitchen and wood elsewhere. We have out this off so long I'm embarrassed, we just can't get going on it.
