I need help with the design of the new counter top

I will soon have a black/white/grey quartz counter top installed to replace old, old formica. My issue is the back splash. I believe I will have the new counter replace the backsplash on the right side of the pic but they also wanted to put it behind the stove. There will be two little counters on the left & right of the stove but I thought I may just want to keep the back of the stove area a different look/color.
I have been very fortunate to get help here before and the results were outstanding.

I put the same granite as my countertop behind the range and up to the hood vent and love it. So easy to clean and constantly get compliments. Love your idea of a different color behind the range. Why not another splash of red?

I don't like too much of the same surface, so I tale countertop to wall (on integral back spash) and mosaic the back splash). I removed the granite from behind the range and while area was exposed installed a pot-filler. Then used one design of Carrera marble (flat for cleaning) behind the rand edged with marble pencil trim. The remainder for yours would look nice with some subway style;: either stay granite to pick up the great neutrality with the red accent stools or a glass subway in color of your choice.

I actually chose Quartz counter over Granite because it is non porous but the sink is a Blanco granite composite. Putting a little red back there is a good idea @Barb. . @Barbara Burnham what is marble pencil trim and what is subway style.

Oh and the other issue is lights. I thought about recessed can lighting with a dimmer but the ceiling is very, very high so I don't know if they would work. I need to find a good site with many lights to choose from. Right now there are fluorescent (ugly but hidden) lights.

Hi Sherrie- would it be possible to get a better pic of the right side so I can see how much area you have over there? What is the actual wall color on the current backsplash area on the stove wall? I would make sure you use medium to dark gray to help tie in with your new countertop palette. With most large pieces being white on that wall, they need to "pop", but you might consider using small red appliances for your red accent, that way it doesn't limit color options in the future, because all your other colors are neutrals...

You could paint the area behind the stove red. Also, are those cabinets over the sink area? How about removing that to open it up?????

I agree with Barbara... too much of the same surface is a little blah...I love wood and would recommend wood tiles as a back splash like the ones seen here in the pic. After a finish is applied it is so easy to clean. Please post photos on what you decide. We would love to see what you do. :)

@dawnmarilynn the backspash by the stove is the same as the one shown below.

Jennifer this is a huge area and the cabinets do break it up. They also hold dishes. Boards & Beams I do like wood and therefore have a lovely cedar patio. The rest of the houseis very modern and wood would not fit the look. I think I just need to color it up a bit.

@Sherrie-thank you for that extra photo; it helps a lot. Since you will be losing the large amount of "black" color on your countertops, you will need to add back solid black and gray to the overall scheme to keep a cohesive space. After seeing this new pic, I would suggest a nice med gray on just the top portion of that wall with the chair rail.(match the gray in your new quartz counters) I would still add warmth with wood either in a small island or a large, nice, cutting board and some small greenery on the window sill. It will look great!! pls post pics!

I really love the idea about the gray above the chair rail. That will be easy to do as soon as they remove thebacksplash. This will make a huge difference in the whole area @dawnmarilynn. Thank you so very much. I will post a pic when it is complete.
