Should all side tables, TV stand in living room match?

I like the look of clean lines. I have two brown love seats and would rather everything not be brown. This would involve me painting and I can't decide what to do. Is it a decor rule that all wood furniture in the room match?

All the decorators tell you now that "matchie, matchie is out!" So go with what you like be it something strong like red or mellow like yellow! Be sure and post photo of finished product...we Home Talkers are nosey...no, make that interested! HA!

Jeanette is right--the trend now is more of a "collected over time" look rather than having everything match. Although matching everything is easy, it's also boring. Almost any color will go with your brown love seats so pick a color (or colors) that you like and use it to visually spice things up. I always find it easier to use fabric, a rug, a piece of art etc., I like as my "inspiration" and pull colors from there. Something as simple as a throw pillow can be used for color inspiration. Oh, and as far as decorating "rules" go...rules are meant to be broken! It's your house. Do what makes YOU happy and don't worry about the "rules" that somebody deems "appropriate" or the "right" way to do something.

I never cared much for rules, and certainly not when decorating my own home. Go with colors which make you happy when you look at them. You really can't go wrong with that.

This is good to know because I like color! I just didn't want to make a chaotic looking room. Thanks for all the help! now.....to choose color.

I agree with all the above- but do try to tie in the color(s) of the side table somewhere else in the room. That will make it less likely to look chaotic. it could be pillows for the sofa, art work, lamp base or shade or other accessories. You also want to make sure you are using a "color scheme" from the color wheel (google it- lots of info out there) or your eye will not like it. Good luck!

Definitely don't have to match, but try to keep them is some similar style. Don't mix cabin rustic with Queen Anne!

Since your seating is brown it may be fun to paint the tables different colors. Like red and green and gold to warm it up. Or aqua, coral and cream for a cooler color trend. Have fun!

Here are the before/after pics of my side table. Thanks again for the suggestions. I chose this red because I like red and thought it's a nice red for the stand. settle, warm color.
