How can I get the marker off of this stone slab

Question

Someone was giving away a slab of stone and I want to use it for a project, but someone has drawn all over it in black marker (I think permanent marker) . How can I clean it off without ruining the stone. Also does anyone know what kind of stone this is?

I would try rubbing alcohol first. If that doesn't work acetone or hydrogen peroxide may work. Don't mixt them!!! Try the first option if that doesn't work move on to the next. Good Luck!

I witnessed a guy remove magic marker pen lettering from a canvas covered jacket simply by squirting lighter fluid on it! Black writing totally disappeared!

@ I have always found that alcohol is the best to remove ink and permanent marker. At work would sometimes use hairspray (alcohol content) when someone used permanent marker on the whit board. The only thing is that it may depend on how long the marker has been on the surface.

I read where taking a dry erase marker and going over it would remove.

I agree with Susi. I'd try Mr Clean eraser. I have great luck with it. I think they have some sort of acid in them that takes off a lot of things. Good luck.

I removed permanent marker from a white car with toothpaste (not gel, regular paste). Also, those magic erasers are great.

Go to the Sharpie pen website and they have a link to a great ink remover.. I used it to get Sharpie out of a shirt. If the slab is porous it might take so e time.

I worked in a tile and stone place for a short time. Looks like travertine or creme marfil marble and can be sanded down, left as is or re-polished. Because any natural stone is porous you may want to seal it, with a sheen or no sheen. Good luck.

Turpentine an light color tile with bleach or hydrogen peroxide, use acetone or lacquer thinner for dark color tile. This is the recommendation form Marble Insitute and it is what we go by when we are cleaning.

Because hydrogen peroxide is non-chlorine and oxygen-based, it is a safer and superior alternative to chlorine bleach. It removes permanent ink stains without damaging the stone surface or leaving white marks. It also disinfects the surface!

A poultice is a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide that you apply to the ink stain to create a soft paste. On marble and granite, hydrogen peroxide can remove stubborn stains from permanent marker ink.

The solution for this seemingly impossible stain is to soak the marks with an Oxalic Acid paste. Mix the powder with hot water until it dissolves and forms a liquidy paste. Apply the paste liberally onto the stain, so the acid solution soaks into the stone surface and begins to lighten the marker stain.
