How to restore old wood panel doors that were painted over varnish

Our home is old, probably built in 1930s, four square with wood panel doors with glass doorknobs. The doors are all cracked on the surface. Originally were varnished and then layers upon layers of paint which is a mess. I want them painted off white. Help?

If the paint's cracked, you'll have to strip the doors (unless you want the chipped, cracked effect!) You could carefully use a heat gun and paint scraper to scrape off most of the paint, then use paint remover and sand them. Then prime and paint.

That is pretty much what I thought...winter project. Guess I will get hubby a heater for the garage. That would also help with the temp of the rooms up above it.

Refurbished baseboards in my 100+ year old home. The paint will scrape off readily if there is varnish over the natural wood. I just used a scraper and lots of scraper blades until someone told me just to file the edge when it got dull. The only areas that needed a chemical stripper was where the varnish had worn off and the paint got onto the actual wood.

Not sure if it's the same in the US but over here you can have the doors dipped which removes all the old paint and varnish. Prices vary but a good company will also advise if the doors are sturdy enough to take the process as it sometimes also melts any glue which means reassembling the panels!
