Gardening: Walter, Erica, and all you horticulture experts...What is this weed thriving in our pasture? How do we get rid of it?

How long should the horses stay off of it after we treat the weeds with a chemical and which one should we use?

Here are 4 Different links to "Prickly Lettuce". Although it looks similar to what you have, the patterns of the flowering is different and the plant itself is a lot more narrow. Also, this plant does not flower until between July and September. There is a lot of information in the 4 links that I have provided. Read through them when you get a chance. This should help you be able to determine whether is is or ISN'T for SURE "Prickly Lettuce". Good luck and keep us posted.

I have some books that I don't think are packed away yet (I'm in the process of moving), and If I have a chance today, I will try and see if I can find your mystery plant in one of them. Also, keep in mind, that this may not be a "Weed" at all. It may be a regular plant that is just a "pest" to you because it is taking over your pasture. We may be looking in all the wrong places by looking under the "weed" category.

Wondrous Peacock Topiaries

One of my favorite facebook pages for gardening inspiration is Old Moss Woman's Secret Garden. I'm still not sure exactly who Old Moss Woman is. Her page is wonderfully mysterious to me, ...»
all I know is that she collects and shares the most incredible photos of nature and gardening and posts them.

I messaged her to ask for permission to share here which she graciously granted. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.

Here's her page if you'd like to check it out:

I have seen some absolutely amazing botany in my time of 28 years, but these Peacocks take the ...»
cake!!! Has anyone ever been to the Botanical Gardens up in Niagra Falls(or it might be Toronto) Canada? They have a BEAUTIFUL fully botanical clock in the middle of other sculptured pieces similar to these Peacocks. They are absolutely BREATH TAKING!

I absolutely 100% agree with Jan in that I think she should produce a book with the photographs and names, descriptions and locations of each thing. As long as she has the permission from the owner (or whomever made/grew the masterpiece) she should not have a problem. I think she would sell MILLIONS of copies!!!

Thanks so much Miriam for sharing these wonderful photos and that link with all of us! It has brought such pleasure to my day!!!

Do you think home warranties are a good investment? I haven't found a Home Warranty company with good online reviews.

This is a FANTASTIC renovation Karina! It reminds me of one of the shows on tv (I can't ...»
remember the name) where a team of competitors go in and remodel rooms or houses. This definitely looks like the work of a professional! I'm sure that those 4 kids and the Mom and Dad are Very Thankful that you did this for them! Have you thought about doing into this professionally? You would be great at it!

Thanks for posting this so we could all enjoy it and get great inspiration from you!

Gardening: A friend sent a post from another site about killing weeds with vinegar. I'm posting the pix and part of the text from

that. This result happened in only one day. I brushed Roundup on some liriope volunteers over two weeks ago and they're just now puny and can be easily pulled out of the ground, but none are truly DEAD like in this photo. Will this be safe, do you think, if I put it on liriope volunteers and other weeds in my front yard? The yard has tree mulch, no grass, but lots of hostas, some hellebores, ferns, azaleas and other things. Guess I'd need to spray directly onto the potential victims, or brush it on with a sponge brush?

I guess it all depends on what kind of weeds you are killing when it comes to using vinegar ...»
(from reading this post). Some people have great success and others don't. As I mentioned before, When my husband and I mixed Household Vinegar with Dish Detergent and a pinch of Salt and sprayed it on Poison Ivy, it totally eliminated it. It was gone over night. I also think that zoning might play a part in some of this too. It seems like certain people in different "Garden Zones" have better luck with Vinegar than others.

  • Kitchen Floor BEFORE-I've had this floor for almost 20 years. It was not in my budget to replace it. I had seen people paint their wood floors, so I decided to try to paint my vinyl/linoleum floor. 1
  • Before painting with primer--I mopped the floor with a little dish soap, Mr. Clean and warm water. I rinsed the floor until the water was clean and soap free. This took about 6 moppings.
After the floor dried, I wiped it down with TSP (Trisodium phosphate). The TSP helps to clean, degrease, and dull the finish of the floor. I used a latex "oops" gray primer.
  • I have 2 cats and a dog. I used my leaf blower to make sure there were no stray hairs flying around. 1
  • To get a good feel for the pattern I used newspapers. 2
  • I got busy with some painter's tape and started painting my squares.
  • I used Mythic paint. It went on really well, and 18 months later, is holding up fantastic. I don't like shiny floors-I chose the original floor for THAT reason. It was dull. I chose a satin paint, and decided not to seal the paint. 2
  • I love how it turned out, but honestly, now that I have black countertops (that I painted) I'm thinking about changing out the blue squares.... You can see the full tutorial over at My Repurposed Life http://bit.ly/IeyAKO 8
  • UPDATED to add. I have changed out the blue squares for dark gray squares. See more details on the blog. http://bit.ly/Y8wq6S

I agree with Bonnie --- DON'T CHANGE THE BLUE!!!! If you change the Blue to Black, it will ...»
darken the room, and it will also make it look a bit cheaper (think, Diner). I think the Blue makes it look fabulous!!!! The Blue and the White together look amazing together and just make me think of a bright, warm spring morning with birds sitting on a tree just outside the window singing a lovely song. I love that your kitchen chairs match and I think that adding a touch of the Blue to the corner shelves by the window over the sink would really tie everything together absolutely perfectly! Great job Gail! Thanks so much for posting this! You obviously put a lot of hard work in to this, and it shows!!! =D
