  • Paint your ceiling first, wrapping the corner. Take your ubiquitous 5-in-1's back edge and gently score a mark.

  • Just use the corner as the naturally flowing guide.
  • Using a 3 inch brush loaded with paint, just cover the line. 3
  • Viola, this little trick will make even a coffee lover's line look good.

Now I wear specs but they didn't seem to help with the "white on white" problem. Luckily, I ...»
went into painting furniture so it's not an issue anymore. Now my big problem is dealing with dust in the finishes! It never ends. Come visit me at www.facebook.com/portaverdestudio. We have many painted/refinished pieces for ideas.

  • Start by painting the trim first . You can pass over onto the wall by an inch or so.
  • Loading up your 3" brush full with paint helps you to 'find your line'. With subtle pressure, run the tips of the bristles to the corner. You will find the right resistance to your bristles in the corner to make the line straight.
  • To make the line even straighter, take your 5-in-1 tool wrapped with a wet rag and drag it down the corner. At just the right angle, this will give you a crisp, straight line.
  • A 5-in-1 tool and clean, wet rag can give you a laser straight line. That is if you don't drink too much coffee!

Having the luxury of knowing you are going to be in a house for a long time, you can invest the love that turns a house into a home.

Atmosphere lighting; hehe. I look better in candlelight too.

  • Look familiar?!?
  • With the point of your 5-in-1 tool, remove the old caulking.
  • The inside of the gap needs to be free of obstruction so the new caulk can fill the inside. Remove what you can of the old grout off of the inside edges.
  • With a razor blade holder, clean the remaining caulk off of the surface of the tile and tub.
  • Using a Scotch-brite pad soaked in Ajax and water, clean outside and inside the crack. All soap scum should be removed around the crack.
  • Flush the area to remove the dirt and soap. 1
  • Precisely apply tape to follow the profile of the crack making the outline of the finished caulk line. Leave about 3/16 of tile exposed on each side of the crack, enough surface for the caulking to get a good grip.
  • Polyurethane caulk works best. This PL brand is available at The Depot. 2
  • Fill the gap with sealant, pushing sealant ahead of the nozzle. The little bulge of sealant in front of the nozzle is the only way you will know that the gap is filled.
  • Making progress; caulk is evenly in place
  • Put a big squirt of dish washing liquid in a quart of water and throw in a small rag. Keeping your fingers wet in the super saturated soap solution, finger the caulking smooth.
  • Almost there.
  • After removing the tape, there will be little bit of a heavy edge which you can easily smooth down with a last light pass of your soapy finger.
  • Like a factory finish.
  • The only thing that could have made this gasket turn out better would have been some band-aid colored caulk to blend in, but then you could not see how nice the caulk looks.

What to do about that leaky shower and tub caulking, once and for all. Best, Charles

Priming sheetrock.

Priming sheetrock walls? Here's some tips to help you knock it out.

--If the walls are previously unpainted, use a primer made specifically for drywall. If ...»

they have been painted before, then an all purpose primer will do. And paint stores are happy to tint the primer in the direction of the finish coat color to help with coverage. BTW, any caulking is done after priming.

--The most common mistake folks make when starting to paint is not using enough paint on their roller or brush. The right roller cover and brush will allow you to load up your tools with paint, making the job quicker, easier and give a better finish, doing away with Doc Holiday and the dry brush gang!

--Buy the best brush. I like Purdys. If you know how to thoroughly clean them out, then you will have no qualms about spending the money for good equipment. There should not be any 'milky water trails' coming out of the heel of the brush when you are done. When rolling bare draywall, a lambswool roller cover works best. It holds a tremendous quantity of paint and unlike synthetic roller covers, it cleans up easily and will give you years of service.

--Before you start, it helps to pre-wet your roller by dunking it in water then spinning out the excess water. This will give the paint quick, even absorption into the cover. The brush can be pre-wet as well to help the paint not dry to and stick so easily around the base. The excess water in the brush can be 'kicked out' on the toe of your workshoe.

--So you are ready to load up your equipment with paint. When rolling, don't start right next to the corner or right next to your just finished area. Instead, come out one or two roller widths and work your way back into the corner or just finished area with your full roller. Once you have the paint distributed over an area that can be completed with one roller dip, make one more pass to even it out, filling it in completely. One more thing, keep a slight bit more pressure on the leading edge of the roller. This will help avoid leaving heavy roller edges.

Just remember the three most important things: use more paint, 3X!!!

Happy Trails,

Charles Peace

blemishes you want to patch. Use the 3M 'no prime' non-shrink spackle that does not need priming again. Then top-coat!

It's Showtime, for a film being shot in this old house.

A remake of Steel Magnolias is being shot in this 100 yr old Neil Reid house, our famous architect.

I want to be in the credits somewhere so this is it.

Sally, if memory serves from looking at a book on the house, the original drive came in straight. How astute of you. The house has been added onto the back over the years enlarging the kitchen, and the second story 'sleeping porch' on the left, closed in.

  • The new drip edge primed, installed and caulked to the door. Like most exposed metal doors, rust was beginning to form on the face from the bottom.
  • After painting, the drip edge looks like part of the door.

Prevent door bottoms from rotting or rusting by installing a drip edge.

A standard door bottom drip edge can easily be cut and attached to the bottom of a door, blending in after caulking and painting. Most exposed doors rot or rust from the bottom because ...»
the bottom edge cannot be protected. The drip edge keeps the water from curling under the door, instead allowing it to drip onto the threshold.
