Island built from recycled pallet wood and rough cut walnut

We decided to build a 4'x4' island using 2x6 pallet wood and rough cut walnut. For the top we headed out to a sawmill that has been shut down and the owner gladly met us and let us pick ...»
through his wood. We decided upon a few pieces of rough walnut that he had. #Bestof2012 #Love2Repurpose #recycle

  • Early in the season, make the straw bales into a greenhouse, the "conditioning" of the bale below emits lots of heat during the process which warms the root zone and protects plants on the surface from frost. They love this up in the Arctic Circle in AK and Canada. See more at www.strawbalegardens.com 1

Stenciled Tables

Recently I've stenciled a couple of dining room tables that have been fairly popular, so I thought I would share them with y'all! They are done so that the wood shows through the stencil ...»
and I love the look. Here are the links to the posts: Paisley table - http://www.domesticimperfection.com/2012/05/...

My Trip To Kingwood Center

Photos from my trip to Kingwood Center located in Mansfield Ohio. It's a 47 acre estate turned into a series of public gardens. When asking around, it seems as if no one really knows ...»
about this place. More information regarding Kingwood Center can be found here http://www.kingwoodcenter.org/cms/

  • I started with this old piece of a crib.
  • I removed some of the spindles and built a simple box around it.
  • I added a few shelves, then some curbed trim was added to dress it up.
  • A little molding on the bottom of each shelf will keep plates from sliding off.
  • Painted a crisp white! 1
  • I decided not to put a back on this piece so that the wall color will show through. 5

Hi all! This is my first post here on hometalk, but I'm sure I'll be a regular around these parts!

I love to repurpose found items. I made this adorable plate rack out of a "curbed" crib and some discarded trim pieces.

  • No weeding, raised beds make access easier, tomato plants love this method of gardening. Great for potatoes also, no digging! Anything that grows in the soil will do well in the bales also. 9

  • Planting annuals in the sides also makes the garden look attractive as well as productive. 6
  • Direct seeding into a seedbed of sterile Planting Mix on the surface of the bales. These seedlings grow rapidly due to the extra warmth from the decomposing bale below. Once seeded, cover with the plastic sheeting to protect from critters, frost, hard rain etc. See more information at www.strawbalegardens.com

Straw Bale Gardening, great in all climates from the Arctic to the Caribbean islands!

Straw Bale Gardening is essentially container gardening, without the cost of a container or the planting mix to fill it. Just buy a bale of straw, go through the "conditioning" process ...»
and plant, then water, then harvest, it is about that simple. Get the full details at www.strawbalegardens.com
