A fireplace creates a space of warmth in the home, but it is also a beautiful focal element to a room.
Here is a way to create a faux fireplace for your home to create your room's centerpiece.
We got our fireplace surround from a friend who was updating hers. We started with a concrete surround which was VERY heavy.
We needed to build a hearth for the fireplace, so we rummage for scrap wood and pallet pieces.
We affixed the concrete surround to the wall and secured into place with 2 screws on the top.
We framed the outside edge to give the appearance of a built in. I used craft paint to match the trim to the concrete surround.
Our mantel was more scrap wood. We had 2 fence posts from a previous project. After distressing them and adding paint and stain, we stacked them together and wrapped them in twine and attached them to the top of the fireplace surround.
The backing was created with a piece of cardboard and various pieces of old newspaper, scrapbook paper, sheet music, and book pages pasted to it.
I placed a vintage military crate in front of the paper. Our local grocer was selling birch wood logs, so I placed Christmas lights under the logs to create a glow at night.
Not only did it add ambient light, but the Christmas lights slightly heated the logs enough to give off a wonderful smell.
If you find Fireplace surrounds on Craigslist or at garage sales, don't pass them up.
Use your imagination and what you have on hand to create your rooms focal piece.
