Guess it depends on how much cooking you do. I'd want something that is easy to clean and durable. Personally, I'd go with Rustoleum, or something similar, made for kitchens.

@Charlene Very cute kitchen! Why do you want to paint it? I want to do mine because I'm really tired of it and it needs a face lift. Let us know what you decide to do..

What are the ingredients in the Rustoleum? If it's plaster of Paris, that's what is in some of the chalk paints. It might be pretty much the same thing.

My husband and I painted our kitchen cabinets with Rustoleum in another house. We used white and they lasted for several years. There will inevitably be some wear in frequently used spots. The downside of white is that it yellows over time. But if you are using other colors, you should not have any problem. The results are in the prep work. Take your time. Several light coats are better than one heavy coat. Search through Hometalk for similar projects. Good luck. I hope you post some pictures.

@Charlene Be on the lookout for knobs and pulls on sale or paint the ones you already have (I could not see in the picture). They make a difference, Good luck.

@Kathi Shetty Thanks Kathi, I go back and forth. I do love AS chalk paint and it's so easy to use. I have done many furniture pieces that look beautiful. Although I did our railing on the stairs and it's chipping a very small amount- due to the high traffic I imagine. Just not sure... ugh..

Although I've used AS chalk paint on furniture, I, personally, would never, ever consider using chalk paint for kitchen cabinets but I know a lot of people are using it on kitchen cabinets and loving it--at least for now. To my way of thinking, its durability over time has not been sufficiently proven to me, especially in a high traffic area like a kitchen where durability and scrubability are both really important. If you rule out chalk paint, the Rustoleum product is not your only other option. There are various other paints on the market now that have been developed especially for painting cabinets and this would also widen your color choices too. I would stop into a paint store (or several) and ask the paint professionals there what products they would recommend for prep and paint. Painting cabinets is a lot of work and if you are going to go to all the trouble to put in the time, effort and money, you want it to last so you don't have to worry about doing it again anytime soon. On the other hand, if you are planning to sell within the next year or two anyway, you always have the option of using whatever you want now and letting the next homeowner worry about repainting if it doesn't hold up. However, whatever you decide to do, you need to be careful you don't turn prospective buyer's off with your choice. So many buyer's seem to want and expect move-in ready homes these days. They don't even seem to be willing to repaint walls so if the kitchen doesn't hold up and needs repainting at the time of sale, the thought of taking on a huge project like painting kitchen cabinets will be a deal breaker for some prospective buyers.

If you use chalk paint just don't wax the cabinets. Wax and a hot kitchen are not a good combination!
    • Charlene Charlene on Dec 06, 2014
@Janis Hill Good point. I think the liquid varnish would be a better choice.

Have any of you tried Giovani cabinet paint? My concern with chalk paint is the chipping. I love the look of it, however. My coffee table looks great with chalk paint, but even though I was careful and took my time, it has a couple of chips. There is liquid sandpaper if you're using regular paint. I've only used it in small areas, but have liked it.

@Kris Kowalski I haven't heard of Giovani's but thanks for the information, I'll check it out.
