DIY Gathered Burlap Mantel for Christmas

Easy to make gathered burlap to decorate a Christmas mantel.
For this project I used burlap ribbon that has been pre-overlocked, so the edges don't fray. In New Zealand this is called Tree Jute and you can buy it at Bunnings in the gardening section.

Next thread a needle with thin ribbon (make sure you knot one end) in the colour of your choice. Stitch a gathering line as shown...
Pull one end to gather the burlap ribbon. Remember the tighter the gathering the more burlap ribbon and gathering ribbon you will needed.
Place 'stick it' hooks on the mantel at each end. Drape the gathered burlap and pull up in the centre with a hook. Stitch or hot glue a large burlap bow in the centre.

Decorate with ornaments and candy canes hung individually by ribbons.
