How to Make a Succulent Window Box

A little bit DIY, a little bit planting! Bring some greenery to your house for the winter months. Good for the brown thumbs among us.

Window box was made using "waste" lumber from another project.

Very neat looking Sara. Do you know the name of the tall succulents? I've never seen anything like them. Looks like mini tress in among bushes in a succulent world.

Hi Becky, the one all the way to the left - with the barky stem - is an aeonium. The other two I haven't identified yet!

I love this idea. I don't have a "brown" thumb, but I do have narrow window sills. Thanks for the idea.

Who says window boxes have to be on the outside! This should be a great way to overwinter your succulents, no matter what color your thumb.

Nice job, Sharon. As long as your succulents are getting plenty of bright light, they should come through your Green Bay winter well.

Oh I love that! LOL My dear hubby has been a Packer fan since the age of six. He's not sixty and own two of the shares they've sold over the years. Not much, but hey, they're Packer Shares so it's all good. Our home library is painted and decorated in Packer green and gold and I hear the Gentleman's Parlor will soon be home to his Packer collectables once we get the built ins installed. Fine by me! :^D

Great idea! I have a slew of tiny succulents I've propagated and this would be a nicer solution than the mini pots I have them in right now. I'll use old wood we have lying around and line it with a plastic window box with the hole plugged. Have the perfect south-facing window sill for this to sit on. Thanks so much for the inspiration!

I have a question is there drain holes? If so the water would go all over my floors, if not won't the plants drown? Other wise this is awesome and I so want to do this in all my windows year around.Good job!!

Denise, I think this type of window box is deep enough that you could get away without drain holes if you put some gravel in the bottom and use a soilless potting mix. (And you are careful not to overwater.)

Hi Denise, Douglas is exactly right! Succulents need so little water that I did not worry about drainholes on the bottom.
