I have noticed that if I thoroughly rinse all of the fruit(especially bananas) that comes into my house immediately upon coming home from the store, I get no fruit flies. All Summer long, not a single fly, that I noticed. You just have to rinse them really well. I often soak my banana bunches for about 30 minutes in a bowl of cold water, upside down so that any eggs stuck inside the nooks and crannies of the stems come loose. Simple. :)

@Mary Beth...... My mother always called them "Old wives tales".. I'll pass along a few I use...1. cleaning out your kitchen sink drain or the garbage disposal. First you will need baking soda and vinegar(white or distilled, doesn't matter). I usually pour the half of box down the drain and slowly pour the vinegar down, as is starts to foam up, stop pouring. Wait for the foam to go down then repeat. @ 2. nothing beats cleaning grape juice, red wine, animal mess out of your carpet then ...»
good old Men's shaving cream... thats right I said men's shaving cream. First you want to dampen the area, then get some Barbasol shaving cream and rub in, then scrub in and leave for a few hours..come back and wipe up....you are done. I use to clean houses and the rich ladies thought I used magic lol..Crazy, I know! I have posted a link just for you Miss Mary Beth.....Enjoy!http://thelongestlistofthelongeststuffatthelongestdomainnameatlonglast.com/tales.html

I fill a small pimento jar or baby food jar 1/2 full of apple cider vinegar and cover with small piece of saran wrap. Poke small holes and put a rubber band around the rim to hold in the saran wrap in place. Shoo flie don't bother me!!! They take up residence in the jar. I keep my jar on my counter in a hidden place.

This is a great suggestion but please remember this just masks the problem. Its only attracting them to the vinegar, they get caught and drown.

Catching the fruit-fly is one thing but getting rid of the nesting area is clearly most important. Firstly people call it a fruit-fly but it may be something else like Phorid Fly, Drain Fly. In any case proper diagnosis is critical in getting rid of these pests. Finding the nest and removing ...»

the nest is most important. Fruit-fly will normally be coming from rotting fruit. Old fruit that is beginning to rot is the first choice for me when Im looking for an infestation. Secondly, plants are another good source. They love to nest in the soil in plants. Diaper pales also draw fruit- flies. I remember one time a diaper bucket with a lid had not been emptied fast enough and they were all inside the bucket. I also found an infestation in the grease filters of the cooking range. remember they love rotting organic matter and lay their eggs there. When the eggs hatch the larva feeds and grows there. Hope that helps clear up some confusions. http://www.newerapestcontrol.com

This works wonders...and yes it has to be the Apple Cider Vinegar because of 'fruit' base of this vinegar but the main reason that the dishwashing liquid (any will do) has to be added is because it makes it slippery so they can't just land on top of the vinegar and then fly off...they have no choice but to drown in the slippery stuff and drop to the bottom

But first and foremost...find the source and throw it out!!
