Go to Ravelry.com, they have hundreds of patterns. Many of them are free.

Something new parents often don't think to have enough of, or others give them as gifts, is crib sheets. They are super easy to make. Here's a pretty good tutorial, though it's not exactly how I add the elastic. Below you'll see some I made for our granddaughter out of full size sheets as I couldn't find the fabric in the fabric and accent colors I wanted in fabric.

Another idea is receiving blankets. Store bought ones are so small. I make them with a yard and quarter fabric so the finished size is about 43 square. I also make some of them double thick if the flannel isn't double sided. 'm sorry, but the only pictures I have are with our granddaughter so they don't show details.

My mother always knits the cutest hats and blankets as baby gifts. She uses pastel colors and super soft yarn.

No sewing at all needed for this one and way cute....Printed Leggings-my little boy wore them. They can be for a boy or girl because you pick the print. You could do any stamps you want that fit the gender of the baby: http://www.simplyrealmoms.com/posts/simply-made-diy-printed-leggings/

I made a light weight dark teal quilt (printed quilt fabris and flowered backing) for my granddaughter. My daughter loved it. She loved the non-pink color. Because it was a darker teal it didn't show the dirt and could be put on the grass or beach. It was great in the car or when visiting. My granddaughter will turn 19 just before Christmas and she still has her quilt. She asked me to make one like it for a friend a few months back so I know she still likes it.
