Wash the paneling, then prime (several coats will be needed) of Kilz (not water based so it may be labeled original) (and it smells so plan to paint when you can open the windows) then use any latex paint color you want. (Again you may need several coats of latex paint) Also a paint pad works well as does a quality brush, if you use a roller it has to have a deep nap and don't forget to cover the floor against splatters) Painting paneling is a very time consuming project (I have done this to three different homes) but the results are beautiful. Just take your time and then post your before and after photos so we can all see your stunning results.

we painted the 70s paneling in a house we bought. We washed the walls with windex, then primed with Bull's Eye 1-2-3 primer~you can get it at Lowe's or Walmart~and then painted. Almost a year later it still looks great, doesn't scratch or peel off, looks great!

I just painted a whole house full of paneling.. Use white shellac (alcohol based) it dries quickly and nothing bleeds through. It is very thin and dries quickly. Ready for paint the same day!!

Kilz is the best thing to use before painting paneling.
