Back deck remodel

A project for a client a few months in the works...this is the joy of juggling many clients and projects.

The old back yard deck was rotted and on its last legs. The stairs and small deck up at the door were also in a sad state.

the owner wanted a lower maintenance option for the main lower deck. So we installed some flagstone. After the old deck was removed a "frame" was built using 6" landscape timbers. This area was then leveled with about 8000 pounds of crusher fines and then 4000 pounds of flagstone was installed...then the deck and stairs were rebuilt.

The stair treads, upper rails and decking is all Ipe...my Favorite

Dee...Ipe is a very dense tropical hardwood. It has a class A fire resistance rating and can last 60 to 100 years. It is one very durable deck wood

Hey Kevin!! I remember you talking about Ipe in other deck projects! That wood is so beautiful - is it ever used in interior projects such as floors or cabinets? The new deck looks great as does the stone patio!! I'm amazed at the amount of crusher fines and flagstone that was used. That's a lot of tonage!!

Susan S Tonage you say? All of the crusher fines were loaded into 5 gal buckets at the landscape yard then loaded into my truck...then at the project wheeled to the back yard 2 at a time with a hand truck. It was somewhere near 160 buckets.

The flagstone was delivered to the drive and brought to the back via the hand truck as well. ...»

I did treat myself to a decent massage after the bulk of all that "man hauling"

Ipe is used inside...flooring being the most common. After I built my Ipe deck I fell in love with the wood so much I built a patio set from it as well as a dinning set. The Patio set is 100% Ipe but the dining set has Mahogany inset panels.

Beautiful work Kevin!! But, then we've come to expect that. Question: How did you work around the supporting column?

Becky H That column is not a true structural element...mostly decorative fiberglass and hollow inside. Since the ipe is only half as thick as the pre existing redwood I shimmed up the base after the other decking was installed.
