How do I install a Honeywell programmable timer?

I have a single pole switch for my outdoor lights. I would like to change the day to day switch to a programmable timer. The wires on my outlet are different from the Honeywell timer. This is my dilemma. I know the white wire is neutral and matches the outlet wire with the timer wire. I have two black wires coming from my outlet. My question is this, the timer has a black and blue wire. How do I know which black wire from the timer matches my wall outlet since I have two black wires coming from my wall outlet. Help.
Switch I would like to replace with programmable timer.
ground and two black wires
another shot of the outlet
new timer
new timer
new programmable timer

  • The black wire goes to the top black wire on your switch - the bottom black & red go to the blue (assuming the original switch is wired correctly) - if still in doubt or you are worried bring in a pro. Don't forget to turn off the circuit when you do this

    • @Cornelia Schott It is called backstabbing - there is a tiny little slot in the back where you press in to release the wires though generally if there is enough wire one just cuts them off
