It does get hot. Any special paint that would work best?

We used the Rustoleum black high heat spray paint on our brass fireplace doors and surround. By removing a few screws, my husband was able to take the doors and the surround outside to spray it. We roughed the brass up with some sandpaper first. If you are not able to remove your doors, they also sell the high heat paint in quart cans for paint brush application. Check out this how-to tutorial: http://makethemwonderblog.blogspot.com/2013/08/how-to-paint-your-fireplace-surround.html The "before" of my doors looked just like hers. Below is a photo of my doors "after." I still don't love the colors of the stone on my fireplace wall (that's another project for another day) but I don't have a single regret painting over the brass surround. .

I would recommend a high temp paint. They make them for grills to engines. They come in different colors depending on your taste. Good luck!

Thanks for posting this question. My fireplace would be the opposite. I would go from black to a brighter color. I will research high heat paint colors by rust oleum.
