If you can do it, why not? It's not an antique, just a good quality reproduction.. But it's going to be difficult and time consuming.

Hi Cyndie nice to meet you!

I have solid cherry furniture and my whole family freaked when i said I was going to paint it....but I am soooo happy with it! I painted it 10 years ago and have never regretted it! I painted the enitre table and left the chairs wood for almost 8 years before painting them... I also painted the side board and left the top the wood tone plus the mouldings on the hutch were left cherry andI painted the doors and side panels....the mix is beautiful and give the room some extra depth......I think the idea of keeping some of the wood tone is a great idea.

So you don't want painted furniture, just a different colour wood? Maybe you could try a dark wax on a part that doesn't show.. It would certainly be easier than sanding and painting.. But it looks pretty glossy.. Might not take..
  • Ellie Lajuett Ellie Lajuett on Dec 15, 2014
I want painted, just not a pure white
  • Kathy Kathy on Dec 15, 2014
Have you considered selling it and buying something you like?
  • Maria Snyder Maria Snyder on Dec 15, 2014
It looks like it's in such good condition I would consider selling it and either putting the money toward something new that you like or buy a flea market set, something more rustic that would take white/ cream & glaze.

If you're good with chalk paint....
  • Anne Lorraine South Anne Lorraine South on Dec 15, 2014
It is, isn't it? But if I attempted it, it would end up being my gardening table! But the good thing about paint is that you can sand it down and start again.

Did you put a clear wax over it?
  • Orchidmg Orchidmg on Dec 15, 2014
Instead of paint, can you stain it a brown or black/brown?
  • Sharon.hosmer Sharon.hosmer on Dec 15, 2014
I love cherry wood. However, today you get very little if you wanted to sell the set. So paint it--be creative and enjoy your dining room set.

Wax is necessary on a chalk paint finish.

@Anne Lorraine South Not necessarily so about waxing chalk paint. I've painted several pieces with DIY chalk paint and they look great. Of course with those pieces I don't mind if they naturally distress, thus I haven't wanted to seal them.

I vote for chalk paint. You can google how to make your own. A friend did two bedside tables and they turned out beautiful.

NO, Please don't!!!It looks like an antique set, and it is lovely

@Ellie Lajuett This expensive set never goes out of style! You are fortunate to have such a beautiful wood in your room. Cherish it~
  • 957521 957521 on Dec 15, 2014
I see what you mean about the red ;-) However your room currently has a very traditional look to it, brought about by your table but also the other elements in the room. If you want to paint the set, go ahead. But if you go cream or white, you'll start getting into a more cottagy look. Do you want that look or do you want to stay with your traditional? You could paint it black too. Black was very popular with this style of furniture back in Colonial days. Spray paint (probably best in satin finish) will work great. However you'll need several cans of it....like about 10. Maybe selling it and getting something easier to paint to your likes would be a great idea, as others have mentioned.

I would never dare to paint real expensive furniture like yours. In a few years we will surely be back to how it is now and you will regret that you have lost its true value. It is so bad that people now dont realize value and go by what is in style.th9is is my point of view only. Good luck . Monique

It's really a khaki color with green undertones, and thank you!
  • Linda O'Leary-Gleason Linda O'Leary-Gleason on Dec 15, 2014
So glad you decided to leave it alone. I think paint of any kind on such beautiful wood would cheapen it.
  • Vic1559293 Vic1559293 on Apr 17, 2015
If it weren't such a beautiful piece I would say, "Paint it!", but I would not paint this one either. I am glad you chose not to paint it.
  • June June on Jun 24, 2016
No. I think reupholstering the chairs in a soft cream colour fabric may just tone down the red look but Please do not paint it.
  • Linda Linda on Jul 09, 2016
I think it is lovely, if I had this I would not repaint, but try to update the wall art, drapes, recover the chair seats, but it is nice as it is.
  • Connie Connie on Jul 09, 2016
Glad you are not painting it...it's really beautiful. You can always sell it and get something different. I wouldn't think it would be hard to sell, lots of people love the reddish tones of cherry, rosewood and mahogany.
  • Virginia Virginia on Jul 10, 2016
Would NOT paint the furniture - it is gorgeous wood. Maybe....change the seat covers. Suggestion: if you like to do embroidery, get a nice fabric and stitch your last name monogram letter and recover the seats.

Paint the green wall another color, like Creamy beige. Paint your face! LOL. Do not paint that beautiful dining room set. I am with the others on that. Sell it. give it away. Buy or get another set!
  • Darla Darla on Jul 10, 2016
If you have different colored walls, drapes and seat covers. it will make the wood color look different. Warm tones like cream, warm yellow, brown orange or red will make the wood look less red, while blue, green or cold gray will make the wood look more red. That set is too nice as it is to paint.
  • Sue Ryan Sue Ryan on Oct 02, 2016
I am with you . don't care for the color. I had the same issue. I ended up Sanding and bleaching a cabinet. That removed the red. I then stained it the same color as my other furniture. Once done I would change the material on the chairs.
  • Mrs.Byas Mrs.Byas on Oct 05, 2016
No way the wood is beautiful
