you can go to your local hardware store and get fly stickers to hang from the ceiling. They may not look very good, but they are effective.

Try half a glass of white wine with a squirt of dish washing liquid and water to make it foam. This works with fruit flies; it may work for flies as well.

@Neil Robinson this actually worked for us outside in the summer. Of course we don't have flies in the winter time. To do this you would have to use this at each door and if windows are open there as well.

I have done this for the last couple of years for fruit flies and it works. May work for regular flies, but I don't know. You basically take a wine bottle with a little wine left in it or apple cider vinegar. Then you make a cone out of paper to put in the top of the bottle. Cut it off flush with the top. There you go. The little monsters get in there and can't get out. I use a green bottle so I don't have to look at them. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/pest-repeller/wine-bottle-fruit-fly-trap-1675231

My cottage, that I don't use in the winter is full of dead flies when I return in the spring. Can't figure out where they are coming from, they aren't in the house when I close it up in the fall.
