When is a good time to start you seeds indoors? What should be planted first? Do I plant seeds for tomatoes or buy the plants, and what kind do you think is good?

@Terry H I start my seeds the last part of January. Then around the first of March I re-pot them into larger containers. Depending on the weather plant them the end of May or first of June (I live in Oregon).

When you start seeds indoors depends on the last average frost date for your area. if you don't know it, put your zip code in here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/freeze-frost-dates/#b Then take a look at the packets for the type of seed you want to grow. On the back there should be "weeks before planting" information along the lines of "sow seeds indoors eight to ten weeks before field setting." Count back that amount of time on your calendar from your last frost date and that is when you should start the seeds. Whether you grow tomatoes from seed or buy young plants is largely a matter of personal preference. If you are only going to grow a few plants, or want to have a variety, it may be better to start with small plants. If you want to grow a fair number of a variety, it would certainly be more economical to start with seeds. Happy planting!

I agree with Doug (above). I do plant all my own tomato seeds. And, I plant a variety. Then I share my extras with family and friends, and this year will be sharing the extras with my church's community garden where all produce goes back into the community to help provide fresh produce to those in need in our community.

I buy heat pads from the thrift stores to set my flats on for heat, germination is fast and easy. I have also invested in grow lights, they are wonderful. I get nice thick stems, no spindly plants. I start my peppers in January just because they are slow growers. Enjoy! (Denver)
