What do you mean by hold up?

I meant to say, will the counters wear well in a rental home use?. How do they look over time?

If you paint them correctly they should hold up, as long as they are not abused. They should do fine with day to day wear. I would use a paint made specifically for countertops; Like Gianni or Rust-oleum.

You can also make them look like granite or marble....Google it...watch how to videos on U Tube.

Ask Roeshel at www.diyshowoff.com....... she did a rental with Rustoleum's counter paint and it has been long enough that she should be a good gal to ask.

No...we had painted countertops in this house when we bought it. Didn't know they were painted. Made the mistake of leaving a hot WET lid on the counter for about 30 mins (got distracted) and when I lifted it up, the paint peeled right off. So I spent the next month slowly getting the paint OFF the countertops. Someone had painted it 10 years before according to my sources...and it was hideous. Personally, I would either just leave them (it IS a rental) or replace them.

@Sheryll S Mine lasted just fine... I sprayed them with Krylon Fusion. It would be a good idea to tell the tenants, so they don't leave standing water or put anything hot on it. I don't do those things with laminate either.

The cheap rustoleum kit for $20-ish will not hold up with even careful use without some kind of protective topcoat. We painted out kitchen counters with the paint without a top coat and if the counter is damp at all, paper will become permanently adhered, and plastic bag logos will be permanently transferred. Also, if any kind of work is done on the surface the paint will chip off. I'm thinking of painting our bathroom counters with the rustoleum, but using something like polycrilic as a topcoat. I wouldn't recommend that for the kitchen though since polycrilic is not food safe. We ended up building our own countertop from wood flooring in the kitchen to replace the mauve and beige peeling paint monstrosity.

I painted my beige countertops about 8 years ago using latex paints left over from painting the kitchen. Key is beginning prep - sand, prime, paint and then several coats of poly. But recently I rented my house for 16 months and when I moved back in I have not notice any damage whatsoever to the countertop. (I just noticed original date of this post -- why does Hometalk do this? -- surely they have enough traffic without constantly posting old posts!)
