Try dropping in a couple of those denture cleaner fizz tablets, overnight. They clean a porcelain toilet, just like they clean porcelain teeth. Amazing.

We have hard water in our area so we use a fine mesh sandpaper used in drywall projects. It does a great job without scratching anything and it can be used over and over. Sheets come in about 8X10 so we just cut it down in to manageable sizes.

You don't mention what type of stains you have so I'm going to assume rust and mineral build up. I've found that a product called 'The Works' does a great job of removing rust and mineral stains. If the mineral buildup is really bad, then I'd go with the sanding. Best idea is to use The Works weekly to avoid that buildup. I know...I know...not my fav job either :-)

Years ago I lived in an older apartment that had bad stains. The manager gave me a bottle of muriatic acid and had me put a little in and leave it overnight. Worked great, the next morning I just brushed and it was gone. Be sure to have ventilation in the room.

@Patmacb I have had to do the same at another time. It took forever and a day also. Eventually had a nice white throne.

I am with Wendy, The Works. I clean and do detail cleaning, or move outs. We carry The Works. Not the kind in the 2 pack it's weaker. The first thing I do is pour it in and leave it. If the toilet is really bad by the time I go back it's clear and I flush it and pour it in again. The reason it works is because it has muriatic acid in it. Some of the places we go into haven't been cleaned in a year or more and it does work better than anything else I found.
