Is white wax good to keep paint looking flat?

I use Trewax. It's not a soft wax, but I take a little piece under my pad (it comes with a pad) and spread it around and rub it in. That company has been around 'since rocks' . That company also has other products that are not so 'chemically', and they practice that old fashioned good customer service, that is hard to find. It definitely does not give the chalk paint a shiny appearance. I feel like if I wanted a shiny look, I would use regular paint, which I sometimes do. Also use Minwax sometimes.

Instead of wax you can try using a water based top coat with a flat finish. I use General Finishes High Performance topcoat, Flat. However, all waxes and topcoats will add a slight lustre, although the topcoat I use is better than any other product I've tried...and I've tried a lot of them. Attached is a photo of a cabinet door I primed with chalk paint, then painted with a flat furniture paint before topping it with the topcoat I mentioned above. You can see that it is not shiny.

Instead of wax, use a Matte varnish from Americana Paints. It is truly the only real flat matte finish I have found. You can get it at Michaels or online from DecoArts.
