How do I replace a tiled fireplace with cut rocks?

I have a fireplace that is covered with 12" x 12" tiles. I want to replace it with cut (1/2) rocks to give it a more rustic look. Can I put the rocks over the tile or must I take the tiles off first? If I leave the tiles on, do I just cement the rocks right over them? Thanks!

It depends on type of tile. This is the floor in front correct? If there is a glaze on the tile the glaze must be removed in order for mortar to adhere.

Take the tiles off, especially if they are smooth. I would think the tiles could possibly break from the weight. Would you put tile over tile? Most people wouldnt. I have a neighbor doing this to the front of his house. I thought it was interesting, he cuts the rock in half and attaches them to the wall. Its starting to look nice.

I've seen that done on HGTV. I know you mean the whole fireplace is those tiles. Sometimes they cover them up by drilling (in this case) concrete board over them. You would then choose the rock and follow the instructions for installing it.

Hi Cynthia, everyone has great ideas, check to see if your supplier can sell you that wire mesh, it's a diamond shape comes in stainless steel, galvanized or just regular metal it can be cut and shaped easily and cut with regular tin snips. If you use the right fasteners, I believe our sheets use to come in 2 foot x 8 foot I think you could probably put that right over the tile. Might save a lot of aggravation. Check with the supplier or the store, company and double check on this way,. On Purchasing some of this, we've done it before, we drilled right into the tiles mortar joint, with Mason drill bit, depending on your mortar joints on the tile. Some old drill bits might handle it, fastened it with some appropriate tapping screws. With big washers on the screws. See what other feedback you get, and ponder over some of the answers. Some more details might help us to pinpoint an answer better. Have a healthy and safe New Year's. Sincerely. Del.

I had a fireplace with 4x4 white tiles as the front. After much convincing to my husband, that we could change it. We took a hammer to the 4x4's just cracked some holes in them. We then retiled with 12x12 stone tiles from home depot. We love it, and have had it for about 5 years now. No problem. Then we created a new mantle, and it is just what we wanted a rock fronted fire place with a rustic mantle
