Those are nice. About how much did they cost to make? -
Last night as I lay awake thinking about all the Hometalk projects I wanted to do I though about changing our bedrooms doors and use the old doors recycled tinto shelves for my storage containers in the garage. Now I have something to look at for inspiration.
-
Becky, we reworked two of the shelves we already had, so I'm not sure how much they cost. Basically, you need 12 2x 4's, 2 sheets of OSB and some screws. -
Well duh on my part. I'm sorry, I did read that. I'll blame my brain freeze on the antihistamines I've had to take the last couple weeks. I recently found some shelves at Walmart that actually are built to hole this size container unlike the ones HoDe and Ls carry. -
I have used that same design my self. It makes a very fast and strong shelving system for storage rooms. I used it in a rental garage and made it free standing then added some plumbers tape to the garage studs for stability at the top corners. It worked well.

Do you mean plumbers strapping Warren G.? -
Yes...You call it Strapping...I call it Tape... It depends what part of the country you where raised in....
-
When I think of plumbing tape I think of the white plastic stuff. My brother is a plumbing contractor and I've never heard the metal strapping called tape so I wanted to make sure there wasn't something else out there I'd not tried yet. I'm always up for trying something new. -
Great job....kudos to your husband...If I showed this to my wife I'd be busy for at least two days, she thinks these bins are made to be filled, red and green for Christmas, orange and black for Halloween and so on. -
I wish our garage was this organized! That looks great! We bought the metal shelving and then bought containers to put everything in to fit those shelves...however, there are so many things that won't fit in the bins. The only thing I noticed is that if your bins are heavy, you may want to add a one or two 2x4s for cross bracing within the frame of each shelf, considering the length. Anchoring to the wall is also a great idea as Warren mentioned, especially if you have little ones who may try to climb. -
Very first thing installed in our new house back in 2005! Complete now with all the cardboard boxes exploded, sorted, & repacked into clear bins for storage. Amazing what gets shipped around the world when you are prior military! A lot of stuff got dispersed to grown children, garbage bins & Goodwill.

Yes by attaching them to the wall and by putting a 2x4 1/2 way down the length ( or in other words at the 4ft mark) from the ceiling to the floor across all the shelves you add support for heavy items on all shelves. So you have a 2x4 frame supported by 2x4 up rights that are spaced at 4 ft maximum. Unless You use cheap lumber, you can hold a lot of junk. I have put 4 cycl. Engine blocks on these shelves ( but I used Plywood ).

Warren G. I too call it plumber's tape as does my husband and Hardware store....the white stuff is "teflon tape"...LOL Plumber's tape is indispensable for a LOT of things... -
They call it Earthquake Strapping in Vegas, although that can refer to either the strapping with the holes or the specialized strapping made specificallly for water heaters. -
Now that you mention is Leslie, I Have heard it called Earthquake Strapping and seen it used as such, that IS in fact what we used to afix the glass door Bookcases in the Youngest boys room to the wall when we bought them.... -
Wow, that is awesome. It's my dream to be that organized! -
These excite me more than almost anything in life. My husband would make me very, very happy if he would build them for our garage. -
Wow. So neet. I'm going to do this when I get some extra time. I'd hate to show you pictures of my storage building. Tell Mr. Fanatic he did a great job. -
I was jealous of these the first time I saw them and now I'm jealous again! Love them! :-) ~Vanessa -
The dream organization shelving. Thank you. -
I used two kinds of storage in my garage...the wall the car is on has 14" width plastic shelves (study ones)and I added shelves to the top so they go to the ceiling. Thus I have a wall of shelves. I put everything in bins & label them dividing sections for household/tools/pet supplies etc. The other side has those metal adjustable shelves in a 16" width to hold large tubs and I have them against the other wall. The wall that is seen I put 2 closed closets & a lattice Potting table also a ...» -
Angela G Angela, I wish you'd put up some pictures, I can't envision what you're describing....and have to do my garage to appease the hubby as soon as it's warm enough to work out there.... -
Sharron W , You can see more pics by clicking on the link to my blog. -
I have 2 spare bedrooms in my house, one had bedroom junk AND cartons and packing junk for Ebay shipping, the other room had been left as a storage room, with everything but the kitchen sink in it. we used plastic shelves from Home Depot similar to this, and those same exact tubs. my rooms are now clean with 4 shelves placed, and 8 Tubs! Also a low one of those shelves are perfect for making a daybed/shelf type bed up against the wall, that looks like a seat during the day, but a bed at ...»
