Help with dryer door!

Lulu Dubin
by Lulu Dubin
My dryer thinks the door's closed so it won't let me close the door and If it's set to a time it keeps automatically turning on (while the door is open).
It's an Indesit dryer. I've attached pictures of the latch on the door and the hole where it connects which contains what I believe is the locking mechanism. I thought that if I push the white piece in the second photo up or down then it would unlock it but I'm nervous to break it and make the situation worse. Anyone have insight? Do I need to call in a pro?
I would really appreciate advice. Thanks!

Can you get replacement parts? May just fix the problem right up!
    • Lulu Dubin Lulu Dubin on Dec 28, 2014
@Connie Shaddy Yes I realized that I need to replace the door interlock mechanism. I ordered one and am anxiously anticipating its arrival. I hope it fixes the problem.

Try unplugging the dryer, wait about a minute, then plug it back in. The dryer may reset itself.

Yes unplug it and wait a few secs/minute. and try it again (Should work then) or try this http://www.ehow.com/info_7755015_wont-dryer-door-close.html

If unplugging does't work, I'd clean the latch. Might have enough build up to affect the function.

If that doesn't work, call a good repair person! If your dryer's turning on by itself, it could start a fire!
    • Lulu Dubin Lulu Dubin on Dec 28, 2014
@Darla I was able to get it to stop turning on by setting the timer to 0

yes unplug it for awhile. you could have had a power surge or lights went off & back on. messed up timing!

Lulu, on the last picture with the Latch, the plastic piece that is bent down to look as if it protect the screw should be a straight prong the slip into the one hole on the Locking mechanism and the latch goes into the other hole. The bigger worry is that the machine start up without the latch in place and I will think you had somebody to look at the problem for you that changed the wires on the micro sensor switch around, (3 wires, one marked (c) for Common that you do not worry about), and now the normally close (n/c) connection was swapped with the normally open (n/o) connection. I'm just taking a chance by suggesting that someone tried to help you. The machine can only run if it get the right signal from this switch.

I would go online with the manufacturer and type in the problem. Sometimes they will have a trouble shooting page or a tech online feature/ Couldn't hurt to try before you call in a handy man or repairman. Good Luck!

Unplug the dryer and try to close the door with the power off. If it latches. It should return to normal when you plug it back in. The door part of the latch does not appear broken, but the recess and mechanism into which it fits appears to have been triggered by a foreign object while the door was open. You can try to slide the interior lever up or down, but do not force it. If you break off the locking lever, the need for a call to a technician is guaranteed.

Don is right unplug it wait a bit and plug it back in allowing it to reboot. I learned this the hard way. Paying a repair person $100 to do just as I've described and voila' it was fixed!

Thanks for all of the answers. @Ann Brownson @Don Goldwyn @Connie Mar @Margaret King @Nostromo @ Thanks for the input but I've determined based on @Meyndert Borrie Bornman insight that thew problem is actually that the door interlock latch somehow cracked and got bent. I have ordered a replacement part from the manufacturer and hope that by replacing it, the problem will be fixed. I will be sure to update everyone.

had a similar problem with my washer a few years back, apparently you have to clean things now and then! Ha!

Thanks for all the advice. I bought replacement pieces and almost fixed the whole thing myself but I was having trouble removing one of the pieces so I ended up calling in a "pro". He was anything but! But thankfully after a few headaches and a few weeks the dryer is back and we have clean, dry clothes!
