Paint the old cabinets with a melamine type paint inside and out and put on new cabinet doors. Put ceramic tile on the back splash and take off the flowered back stuff above the cabinets. Also paint the ceiling white (flat type would do) and the whole room white. It will brighten it up a lot. Also replace the flooring with laminate click flooring to match your new counter ( an old barn type look is beautiful ) and replace the base board with something about 1 by 4 with a quarter round top and finish off with a quarter round on the bottom of the base board. Lighting above the sink and new lights (or old reclaimed stuff) would finish this kitchen off very well. It would look like a palace when done!

Yes, keep costs min. just now - never know about unexpected nasties in a new home . You don't mention your style pref. which would be helpful. Kitchen has great light. Sorry, I do not agree with M. McGinn on painting everything white. Cabinets are plain and have timeless design. Just remove the dated valence for now. You could add some moulding depending on your style and paint without replacing the doors. Would replace heavy window coverings with mini-slat blinds and put no curtains above sink area. .Hope the backsplash and above cabs are just wallpaper and not tile. It has to go! Baseboards are OK - the electric heater could be sprayed with high-heat paint. I'd lower the light fixture above table. Like the green walls. Don't know floor area, but would replace with something lighter in colour - if it's in the budget. Would not be too hasty in removing the countertop - would do other changes first. (I love orange - my eye was drawn to it even before reading what you said. My impression was Wow! really like that!) Can always be painted if on a strict budget. Me, I'd just add bits of orange in accessories. Am a big user of plants (real or artificial) to soften edges and lines and provide coziness. One would look nice by the big window.. Ah, advice is so easy to give!

Marion has given you some good advice. I like the counters too! The floor could be painted if your budget is small, there are lots of instructions on the internet. We took a floor down to the sub floor in our living room, scored it with a knife into individual "boards" and then painted it and put on a polyurethane coat for protection. We got lots of compliments and peole didn't know it was plywood. or you might get lucky and find hardwood under the current flooring.

I would definitely paint your cabinets. Because they're laminate you will just need to clean them, no sanding necessary, before priming with an oil-based primer. That's the most important thing. Water-based primers will lift the layer of laminate away from the substrate while oil seals the plastic layer down. Once you have primed, you can paint your cabinets with a latex or furniture grade paint. Here is a simple tutorial: http://sandandsisal.com/2014/05/how-to-paint-laminate-furniture.html You can purchase new door hardware or spray your current handles with any paint suitable for metal. My recommendation for this would be Rustoleum Metallic Spray Paint. It comes in several finishes and is easy to use, readily available at the big box stores. Rustoleum also has a countertop refinishing kit but since I've never used it I can't give an opinion on whether it looks good or lasts but it would be an inexpensive alternative to new counters, for a while anyway. Subway tiles for your backsplash are both inexpensive and classic. You can punch up the look with a band of glass tile if you like the look. I'm attaching a detail of a backsplash that my husband installed so you can see what I mean. Adding an island will give you more work space if you don't need a dining table in the space. You can buy one ready-made, either stationary or on wheels. Try looking at unfinished furniture stores and then paint it a fun accent color. Between all the suggestions people have posted, I think you'll have a direction to go in. Painting the walls a color that suits you will help to make you feel at home. I love warm yellows and fresh green tones in kitchens, but colors are very personal. Best of luck on your project!

Thanks everyone! I now have some great ideas! I think I will keep the countertops for now but YES THE FLOWERED PAPER has to go! Painting the cabinets is easy as I have a big empty garage to work in! Cannot wait to get started!

cover the floor, if you can, it really dates it. i would go post war modern. get rid of wallpaper, put floating vinyl floor, and add orange accents if you don't change countertop

These days if you chose to do a modern look and streamline it, orange is IN! Gray cabinets with the orange counter tops would modernize it greatly. And yes, get rid of the wallpaper any way you can. Peel it off. White paint, gray cabinets and orange would work. Less work than a total redo. Also, it might save you re-doing the floor also if you want to save some cash. It would warm it up leaving it as is. If not, go for that also. That's my take on it. Also modern knobs/pulls with a new color will add greatly.
  • Helen Helen on Dec 27, 2014
First step would be to remove wallpaper and all curtains. Paint those cabinets a nice off white or white. I would remove the dated scroll above the sink. New light fixtures, you can get some nice ones at gar age sales or restore stores. What fun it will be to go looking. I don't like the orange countertops, but they are expensive to change, but i would work towards that. That floor is too busy and needs to be changed. Then when you really feel ambitious you could add crown molding to the top. Paint on the walls and cabinets will make a world of difference. Please post pictures when you have started. Would love to see the progress. Just thought of another thing. Paint the lower cabinets a darker shade then the top cabinets. I see that a lot on home lmprovement shows.

paint cupboards white, strip the wall paper, use wood colour blinds. Leave the counter
  • Kathy Kathy on Dec 27, 2014
Be very careful removing the wall paper and start the process in a hidden corner if possible. My home, built in the mid 80s, had mauve flowered wall paper in the kitchen. The original owner put it on the unfinished drywall and when we removed it, it also removed the paper and damaged the drywall. We ended up having to pay someone to come in and skim coat the walls. In other areas of our house, I could get the wallpaper off, but the backing of the wallpaper stayed on the wall making a bigger mess. I would suggest renting, buying or borrowing a steamer to remove it. Good luck!
  • Colette Johnston Colette Johnston on Dec 27, 2014
You could use a new peel and stick tile for the floor - inexpensive, quick and just go right on top of the old flooring.
  • Michelle Michelle on Dec 27, 2014
those countertop colors are now back in style. Keep the countertops, reface the doors with paint, replace hardware, for a quick fix also install new lights, remove curtains
  • Bonnie Ladd Bonnie Ladd on Dec 27, 2014
You guys are just great! I cannot wait until I start getting rid of that Wallpaper! I will post pictures of the progress! Thank you so much!
  • Barbara Barbara on Dec 27, 2014
You can also paint the countertop. check out Lowe's and Home Depot on what you need to purchase and how to do it, did mine and they are beautiful, looks brand new
  • Lisa Lisa on Dec 27, 2014
I would paint the cabinets. Try chalk paint! So easy and beautiful. I just painted my kitchen cabinets with Farmhouse Paints in Khaki. Love! Also, you could use luxury vinyl tile on the floors or, if you have the budget, there is beautiful tile that looks like hardwood.
  • Debra Debra on Dec 27, 2014
Get rid of the curtains and put nice blinds up in a color you choose to go with! We have the floating floor and is easy to install and looks great!!!
  • Joan Joan on Dec 27, 2014
Floating tile floor, new hardware and curtains or take down! Two new light fixtures will update the space quickly. Good Luck! I am working on a 19 year old house that needed updates due to renters - still working on it! lol
  • LaRae LaRae on Dec 27, 2014
I would recommend painting the cabinets, but simply changing the knobs and pulls could make a big difference.
  • Liliana Wells Liliana Wells on Dec 27, 2014
What ever you do, don't tackle too much at one time. Changing the hardware will have an immediate effect on the cabinets. The lights fixtures need updating and need to go together. The wallpaper and the floor need to go. The counter tops can also be painted if a new one is not in the budget. There are several paints on the market for counter tops. You can search Hometalk for similar projects to inspire you. Good luck.
  • Carmie Fleenor Carmie Fleenor on Dec 27, 2014
strip the wall paper, add crown moulding to the top of upper cabinets to give height to the room; I'd replace the back splash w/tile or faux ceiling tile. Paint the countertops w/paint if replacing isn't an option, or, ceramic tile over the top. Also, add trim to the face of the doors to add interest, paint and glaze them. A distressed finish is easier to live with especially in the kitchen. New lights, faucets etc. Recessed lighting under cabinets. The floor could be attacked in a number of different ways depending on your budget. I'd go with wood or a wood look strip vinyl that Home Depot sells. It's very easy to install, looks amazing and is very durable.
  • JHayes JHayes on Dec 27, 2014
I would also paint the cabinets & remove the valance between the cabinets over the sink. You wouldn't believe how much removing that would do to update your kitchen. If cabinets have flat wood fronts consider adding molding to the cabinet doors; if nothing else update the hardware. Regarding the countertops if you're near an IKEA their butcher block countertops are fairly cheap but the install may be a little expensive but definitely add a lot of character. I am single so the upkeep hasn't been an issue for me. I would also use the peel and stick tiles for a quick flooring update as well. Definitely get a wallpaper steamer and save your self the heartache, frustration and expense of wallpaper removal. For the backsplash since it is a fairly small area do something fun with wall paper or paint then cover it with a glass panel to protect it from everyday use. Or maybe use beadboard. Tile would be good, but keep in mind that you'd have to probably cut tile to fit around outlets and at the ends of your run. If you're not a DIY'er this may not be something you want to tackle as your first project. It isn't difficult though. I used beadboard on my stove wall and I painted it with a cabinet-grade paint and I've not had any issues with it...and I cook a lot of red sauces. Update your window coverings. Use the internet to definitely bargain shop. You're kitchen should be easy because you have good light and a straight run of countertops. Paint the kitchen walls. Definitely update the lighting fixtures.

Is the wallpaper secure, no seams loose? If so you may consider painting over it with a chalk paint, I prefere Annie Sloan. Then you can paint the cupboards also with chalk paint. I did mine last winter all for under $150.
  • Megan Robinson Megan Robinson on Dec 27, 2014
I would paint the cabinets - they look very similar to mine from my old house - which I think were an early melamine kind of stuff from the 60's. We cleaned, lightly sanded and then painted with regular latex. I did not know about chalk paint then - which I would probably use if I did it now. They looked great and actually cleaned up pretty easily. I think you could find a fantastic color to go with the counter (but I love orange). Can always change the counter later...
  • Bonnie Ladd Bonnie Ladd on Dec 27, 2014
Anyone have suggestions on changing the round light fixture into a ceiling fan with a light? I think I will go with the chalk paint on the cupboards and keep the counter tops for right now. The wallpaper will be gone quickly along with that ugly A/C unit in the window and the curtains! Thanks for everyone's input!

Get ride of the wallpaper, the curvy wood piece between the cupboards over the sink. Paint the walls a bright white to create a Mid-century modern look, and change the hardware. New light fixtures, curtains in a retro print incorporating orange. If possible, new wood flooring. Keep it simple!
  • Chris aka monkey Chris aka monkey on Dec 27, 2014
@Bonnie Ladd paint paint and more paint, it is the biggest bang for your buck, paint cabinets and walls you will be amazed at the difference, get your ceiling fan at a big box store and ask questions, keep asking until you understand how to do it and most of all have fun xx

Paint cabinets and countertop. Obviously remove wallpaper and paint, plus a new window treatment. If your budget does not allow to replace the flooring then either paint the existing flooring (if no damage to it) or rip it up and paint/stain the subfloor (you just cannot sell the house on a VA or FHA loan with the subfloor exposed). And if possible raise the top cabinets to the ceiling or close to the ceiling and add a top molding for decoration and to take up the extra space. This will make your area seem larger if the cabinets are not so close to the countertop. And a rectangle table vs a round table will elongate the visual interest of the room and make it look larger than it is.

Get rid of the wall paper... if you have vinyl floor, you can paint it.Paint the cabinets. Someone mentioned chalk paint, I agree it goes on beautifully , use at least three coats. But do not seal with the wax, in a kitchen where it gets so humid and hot, wax will be hard to keep looking nice. Use the chalk paint and seal with a couple coats of poly-acrylic satin( that poly will not turn yellow). There is also a cabinet kit you can get by Rustoleum called Transformation..they have for countertops also. It works great. Get great looking knobs and pulls..the bling is in the hardware. Get rid of the florescent circle light in the ceiling..and get a beautiful pendent over your dining table. If you have plywood under that floor, you can sand it and paint it. You would be working, but the result can be gorgeous. I painted a plywood floor, I had no money at all to do the floor with. I used porch paint (3 coats) and sealed it with Polyurethane (3 coats). http://www.hgtv.com/design/rooms/kitchens/painting-kitchen-floors Remove the vallance, take some of the doors off of a few of the cabinets, wood putty fill the holes, paint the insides a contrasting color for that pop of color. Maybe take the cabinets out over the stove and put up shelves for tall jars of sugar, flour..etc..or cook books. Think light and airy...what kitchen would you like? It can be done with little money and lots of research of how it can happen. Seriously good luck and keep us posted.

I would start by taking down the wall paper. Actually not hard to do, I didn't have cash to rent or purchase a steamer, so I got a cheap iron and took down the wall paper little by little. Paint is always the most economical option when renovating on a tight budget. The cabinets actually don't look that bad but as someone else posted get rid of the curvy piece over sink. Clean up the cabinets with Restore-a-Finish from Howard Products or similar Rejuvenate product. Change the pulls/hardware - if you have a Rehab center you might check there first for economical choice - look at the general style/bones of the hardware, because spray paint you can give them the look you want. It's ok to have one style for drawers and a different style for the doors, paint unifies them. The orange counters definitely paint, be sure to use a good primer HomeTalk has lots of great advice on how to do this and in your paint shop. The floor can be painted too, but I would be careful to do this because if it gets scratches will look worst then the original. A floor cloth or rugs can hid most of it until you can do the floor. As for curtains, a good economical option is to use drop cloths, tons of info on how to do this, you can leave plain or paint.. By the way drop cloth can also be used as a floor cloth. Please post pictures of your finished work.

Painting the cupboards would really make a big difference. And strip the wallpaper behind the cupboards. so far all you have spent is money for a gallon of paint. Check out the restore for new lighting fixtures, and look for some up to date window coverings. Counter tops and flooring can be painted as well. I could not afford to change my kitchen floor so I painted the linoleum and sealed it and it looks amazing. There are ways to update without breaking the bank. good luck.

if curtains at the larger window not needed for privacy-get rid of them. paint countertops and cupboards-one shade darker than the other. if the floor is ok paint a border around the outside of it. Replace cabinet pulls and handles along with replacing the center lite fixture with a ceiling fan. would keep the light over the table and try spray painting it to match the walls.. like the idea of beadboard on the walls and maybe paint the walls a vibrant red?? good luck!!

I used tumbled marble on my counter tops it really made the kitchen real rich looking
  • Jackie Penner Jackie Penner on Dec 28, 2014
I like the counter tops, and would paint the cabinet frames gray with the drawers and doors white. I remove and spray primer then spray paint doors and drawers. I've had fairly good luck priming and painting wallpaper. You can alway try it and then strip if it doesn't work out. A sage green- gray might look good on wall. Love the crown moulding idea, and ditching the curtains.
  • Arby Arby on Dec 28, 2014
start with back splash looks like wallpaper making the room dark & out dated. something that would blend in the cabinets & counter top. if you can afford new flooring something to make the lighten the wonderful spacious kitchen. unless the cabinets are chipped or in bad shape I would not start with that. With a lighter blended room they would look quite nice

I did my cabinets with Annie Sloan white chalk paint and then did a Coco wash. They were original dark walnut from when we built the house in 1966 I was in awe of them for awhile till I got used to them. Love them. .For more info contact someone who is in to chalk painting.

Paint the cabinets. Take out the wavy trim over the window. Add molding to make the cabinets reach the ceiling. Use a concrete kit to cover laminate. Add a subway tile backsplash. Replace or just remove curtains. If budget allows add some hardware. Find a pretty indoor/outdoor rug to cover up the linoleum. Check out Rugs USA for a great sale. Find a new chandelier on Craigslist. You are on your way!
  • Peggy Peggy on Dec 28, 2014
I would start by taking down the wall paper then paint the cabinets white and change the knobs. I would replace the drapery then I would paint the base of the table and the chairs black or maybe white. I would paint the walls a pale gray. A backsplash could come later when money is available. So much you can do for very little money!
  • Gail Salminen Gail Salminen on Dec 28, 2014
@Bonnie Ladd I think that there is a lot of potential for this kitchen, but may be a lot of work. I would recommend taking down the wall paper and replacing the floors first - they are fighting with each other for attention. After that you can determine what paint colour you want for the walls and cupboards, but at the moment I think there is too much distraction between the paper and floor to see it clearly. Thanks for asking and do update us with pics.

  • Sonia T Sonia T on Dec 28, 2014
Well there's a lot of good advice already given. You just have to decide what you can afford and how much work you want to do. If you want a quick economical fix, don't waste time stripping paper. JUST paint it and the cabinets too. You may eventually want to replace the cabinets so don't waste a lot of time on the walls until the old cabinets come out. I would be more concerned with a neutral counter top and flooring for the first expense. Of course the floor might not be too bad when you cover the wallpaper and change the orange. You can always add color with curtains. I make them out of sheets. Much cheaper and so durable.

    • Annie Larson Annie Larson on May 11, 2015
@Sonia T The orange countertops (if they're in good shape) could actually give you a stunning mid-century kitchen with the right color scheme from that era. Get rid of the wallpaper and flooring, add new cabinet hardware, replace the draperies with streamlined blinds and and replace the light fixture over the table. Those are comparatively inexpensive items that you can do one at a time and have the fun of watching your kitchen evolve. PS Painting wallpaper is a really bad idea. It will eventually bubble and because the paint soaked into the paper, you'll never be able to get it off. Tear it out and be done with it.
  • Bev Bev on Dec 29, 2014
Yes, I would remove the wallpaper and the wave over the sink. I think it would look great if the cabinets where a high gloss white with added crown molding. The crown molding isn't very expensive and it will update them. I put down laminate flooring in mine and love it. It was easy to do and inexpensive. I think with the thing on the wall over the sink I would extend my curtains higher and wider to hide it when not in use. The light fixtures can always be changed later. I like having a ceiling fan in mine cause it gets so hot when cooking. Lastly, find a really fun bold curtains to enjoy the orange countertop. Hope this helps.

I have mostly had cabinets that either had a soffit over the cabinets, or they go to the ceiling. I've only had a gap at the top like yours once, and there's pros and cons. Pro: display/open storage. Con: less storage, accessibility. I don't think those curtains go well; they should be simpler: curtains not drapes.

START with a good old fashion scrub down... and if you want something totally different put torn brown paper bags all sizes on the floor.. right over that linoleum cover it up.. and finish it with a couple coats of poly urethane.. makes a great shine.. and NO TWO are alike.. take down that WALL PAPER HON... and paint it YOUR FAVORITE color .. or match your appliances.. are you someone who puts things on your counter or keep it bare to the wall.. I wish my cabinets had room over the tops.. to put some of my cookie jars.. been collecting for a while.. or nice place to put lights up high at the ceiling to use as a night light area.. ROMANTIC HUH? Fight the urgh to paint your cabinets just yet.. Every one is doing that wait a bit an the WOOD tones will be back in fashion.. change the hardware if that makes you feel better.. and get cutting blocks to place around on the counter tops..

I want to update also. Im going to choose the flooring I like first. Something that is not going to show dirt tracks. Every TV program remodel I usually see white cabinets put in. I do not like white. I may be wrong, but after buying floor, I would find a back splash that cooridinates. First thing I noticed of your kitchen was the floresent light, my mom had one in the 70's. Good luck. I would love to be remodeling my kitchen right now
  • Kayo Frazier Kayo Frazier on Jan 05, 2015
First, take down the hideous wallpaper & repaint the entire room in your favorite color. Take down the scalloped piece above the sink. It really dates the room. Do you need the A/C unit in the window? If you don't take it out this will help bring in a lot of light. For the cabinets I can't tell IF there are soffits if there isn't then I would raise them to about 6-8 inches to the top of the walls, this will give you some head room bet. the cabinets & the counters. I would see if the cabinets can be sanded down to the wood, If so, then I would stain in a lighter w/ color. If you can't because it's MDF then I would paint them white. This will really brighten the room up. I would add under cabinet task lighting, but that can be done later. I would take out the orange counter tops & replace them w/ stainless steel which is highly durable & one of the cheapest materials to use for replacing counters. There is a reason professional kitchens use it all over the globe. For the back splash I would go w/ a darker color then the paint in the room this will make it pop. I would remove the curtains, but leave the sheers. I'd replace the floor with laminate that can look like wood, tile or slate. I do believe they have stick & place that can go down right over existing floors. You can find out from Home Depot or Lowe's. You have a big enough room to do this, I would make a bench w/ storage for seasonal items the full length under the window, cover it w/ padding & add pillows, then get a rectangle table, add 1-2 chairs for the other side. Extra prep space is always a good thing.Replace the light fixture w/ something a little modern. The overhead light needs a cover frosted glass would work well. Hope this helps.

I would suggest you join pinterest and look at some of the Kitchen collections. I have an old kitchen and sat for a year in Chemo planning my remodel..cheap. I took my time, had to..lol. Decided my colors first and theme.. for me modern Farmhouse, nature colors. Slightly distressed and cozy retro. Not white. So take your time and decide what you want it to look like first..what do you like? Take down the wall paper..That scallop thing...Paint the cabinets..Rust Oleum has transformations for cabinets and counters..check them out. I have seen them and beautiful difference. Is the floor tile or vinyl, its hard to tell..take it up and get some good laminate..it is hardier them hard wood. I have a 110 lb Dobermann that puts my livingroom floor through a mess..and they are holding up, I love open shelves and they are so easy to create and make the kitchen airier and fresher looking. That pop of color can be in the cabinets. Here are some ideas.. https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=kitchens here is a 300.00 transformation: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/572168327631929266/
