Laminated Nightstand ~ Beachy Transformation

I’ve learned to never walk away from a cheap sturdy piece of furniture...you never know what it can become...the power of paint is amazing!
I found this sturdy/solid/ugly laminated nightstand at a yard sale for $5 all it needed was a little love...
I wiped the whole piece down with a T.S.P substitute to clean & de-gloss then used Americana Decor chalk paint (relic) for the cabinet applied with a foam brush ~ topped that with a watered down version of Americana Decor chalk paint (lace) applied with a cloth ~ for the drawer fronts I used a homemade chalk paint made with oops samples (love oops samples!) & cornstarch and finally wiped the whole thing down with a dark cream wax ~
Clearly the old hardware was not going to cut it so I made my own using sisal rope ~ not only did it give it a beachy feel, it was cheap!
That's snow not sand on the ground...I wasn’t really going for a beachy look when I started but that’s the feel it ended up with ~ love it!

I have the same sort of night stand, but I'm looking for a smooth, even finish, not the distressed look. Could I achieve that using the same TSP and chalk paint? Mine is also old enough to be sturdy wood and has that same laminated top and I'd like to paint the whole thing a light color.
