The brass can be sprayed with a fairly new type of metallic paint.It is a hand rubbed bronze color.the color is dark and hides any pitting or any damage.Makes metal look updated.Or another option would be "stainless steel"spray paint.Depends on the rest of your house. mantle can be painted or restained a darker color.If the mantle is not too large,they now make a beautiful stone veneer that can easily be applied and has really nice results for less than 100.00.Have seen it on display at Home Depot and Lowes.Go check it OUT!
