How to fade black fabric

Help, I need to fade the fabric to make it look vintage,any suggestions? The lady at Hancock Fabric said use vinegar but didn't know the ratio.

Experiment on a scrap with bleach or peroxide.

Soaking in HOT water with some oxy type cleaner will help to remove some of the dye. The oxy clean will NOT harm any fabric like bleach, and you can control the lightening process by repeating if desired. It will give a faded appearance to the fabric.

Definitely go with bleach.Fill up your washer with hot water and bleach and soap suds.When I pull out the knob on the washer,it stops agitating.I let it sit for as long a you can,several hours if possible.You may want to stir it with a broom handle,several times.Make sure to remember you are dealing with strong bleach.(1-2 cups per washing load).bleach irritates eyes,skin and will bleach anything it comes in contact with-use caution! once you turn the washer back on and the fabric has been rinsed and wrung out,if possible leave it in the sun to dry.Repeat instructions if necessary.

This is what I do know, just the sun will bleach black as quick as you can think but how quick can one think? how quick do you need it done and how light do you need it done?

Most fabrics will fade with prolonged exposure to the sun. However, if you are looking for a quicker result, try Peroxide purchased from a beauty supply store (follow cautionary warnings on the label). Strong concentrations of chlorine bleach will weaken and in some cases disintegrate fabric, so use with caution. As for using vinegar...I thought white vinegar was used to set dye in fabrics? Good luck.

Ritz ( the dye company) used to have a color removal product, you could check into that.

Actually vinegar seals in the color. As Kat suggested washing it and putting it outside in the sun may do the trick, I had this happen with a black shirt before. the sun is the best way because using bleach or peroxide the wrong way could cause streaking and or spots. good luck
