Can siding and insulation be put on a brick home?

I have an older brick home that has no insulation on the exterior walls and it is freezing in the winter. I hate to hide the brick, but the rooms are small (and some configured unusually) so it would be not practical and probably very costly to have the interior walls built out to add insulation. Can I have siding and insulation installed on the exterior, and if so, what do the contractors do about the windows - will they just be recessed/framed on the exterior?

You might want to look into blown insulation...

Our home is an old brick schoolhouse. We had it insulated and sided a few years ago. It worked out great! The contractor did mention that he went through a lot of the brick and concrete drills to do the job, but other than that it went on fine, looks great, and contributed to a huge reduction in heat and electric expenses.

I would just encourage you to get several bids and don't just look at bottom-line price. You need a good, reliable contractor that provides you with a really detailed estimate and answers all of your questions up front.

You can easily have insulation blown into your walls like we did. And we did it ourselves! To do it, first you need to know how much space is between the walls inside and the brick. Most homes built with brick will have at least a 4" space between the brick and drywall. All that needs to be done is to have holes drilled into the walls with a drill bit similar to the ones used to drill holes for door knobs (this one isn't quite as big). The holes are generally done across the walls in the top and middle of the walls, between the studs. Purchase the type of insulation that can be used with the blower and the grade of insulation that will suit you best (this is not a spray in insulation). Then rent a machine to blow the insulation in. When finished blowing in the insulation, simply patch the holes, and then sand them down, spatter from a can, and then repaint. Some simple tips: Use a stiff wire like tool to make sure the insulation is down all the way into the bottom section of the wall. Just make sure the power is off in that section of the house when doing this! When patching the holes use a stiff piece of screen put thru the hole into the wall to keep the putty in place.

@Jill You have to know how much insulation the walls can hold also, to keep from pushing off the drywall.

You can call an Insulation Co., and have them come out and give you an estimate how much you need and the price. They can blow it in from the inside walls. Just make sure you get a good company with references. You want to know that they know what they are doing.
