I use Rust-o-leum (available at most hardware or discount stores) paint then apply 2 coats of a clear polyurethane.

I agree with exterior primer (available in spray can), exterior paint and marine varnish often called Spar varnish on can. Be sure to coat the bottoms of the feet do moisture from the ground doesn't wick into the wood.

@Nanny not sure if you are just putting it outside you will need to use outdoor products. I would recommend an polyurethane intended for outdoor use. If you are painting the piece this would go over top and I would recommend 4-6 coats. Don't forget to do all exposed pieces, including the back. Good luck.
