Different types of saws for beginners

Hi..I am a novice when it comes to working with saws. I would like to start crafting with pallets, work on making baseboards and other wood projects. I have no idea what types of saws to get and for what. I don't want to buy big expensive ones. Just good practical saws and their uses....please help

You will want to get a cross cut saw for cutting across the grain of the wood These will have a lot of teeth. A rip saw will be used for cutting with the grain. Larger teeth on these. Should be able to purchase these for $10-15 each. $20-25 for a good quality. For base boards you would need a miter bob with saw. Can buy these as a kit.

My first saw was a compound miter saw. I love it, because I wasn't confident in using a table saw or something that could rip long pieces. This one is great for my projects, like cutting lengths of lumber or pallet wood. And I love the precise angle and bevel cuts.

After you buy the rip and crosscut saws that John Hortop mentioned, buy a book on using handtools for woodworking. Knowing how to use tools correctly is a wonderful feeling. Later, you'll probably move on to power tools, but from time to time you'll have to fall back to handtools. A good foundation never hurts.

I love my DeWalt able saw, but if you get a Shark pull saw with fine and medium teeth and use it with a plastic miter box, it will work for a lot of things. A pull saw doesn't bind as much as one that cuts on the push stroke; you have to remember to not hold it too tight. I still use it for small jobs.

I own a multifunction tool that I purchased at Harbor freight tool (also available ) on line.I paid less then 20.00 Right now it is on sale for less than 15.00.It works great,does several types of functions,and I think it is a great starting tool.Check it out!!! does not do miter cuts but you can always purchase a miter kit for about 10.00 with a hand saw for that purpose.

we just use a saws all. and a wrecking bar to pull pallets apart when they're broken or you need the wood loose to complete a project

You all were so awesome to get back to me. I am starting a list of saws that you all recommend. I have a Harbor Freight right near me. I can start there. Again thank you all so much...i will need to learn to use these but I am ambitious enough to learn :)
