kitchen backsplash and countertop
countertop
I bought my home 3 years ago, it is a 50's one level 735 sq ft home. Love the home, but previous owners put this awful countertop in, the quality of work is very poor, seams do not match and it is uneven. I want to redo counter top but on a very tight budget the dimensions roughly 9 ft by 24 width. Any ideas would be appreciate, I don't want granite, hate it, thanks!
backsplash
Backsplash was a peach color what in the world were these people thinking. I couldn't stand looking at it painted it white and as you can the previous owners never finish the edging at the top underneath the cabinet. It is not in bad shape, not sure I like the diamonds, any ideas again to make it look nice, paint, etc. thanks

  • You could cover the backsplash with bead board, or keep it and finish it off with edging to give it a finished and polished look. As for the countertops you can buy laminate sheets that glue right over the existing countertops so all you do is cut it to fit and glue it over the existing countertop for a whole new look. If you did that then put bead board over the tile it would look like a whole new kitchen.
  • You can also use peel and stick wood planks if you want to go for a wood plank look on your back splash. woodstick.com sells it, and for your countertops another option is to lay concrete right over the top of it. There are a lot of tips on here for doing that.

Thanks, did not realize I could put laminate over the granite countertop and that should not be too difficult for me to do on my own. Good idea!

Lowes carries a line of heavy duty plastic tiles made to mimic metal backsplashes. All you need is adhesive, the ability to measure, and tin snips for cutting.

I like your countertops.I think I would paint the wood trim a light beige color then paint the backsplash the same color.paint is always the cheapest and quickest solution. If it's too bland, you could try painting stripes with several colors in the granite,or one color in the granite and another color you may want to add to your kitchen,ex.silver or aqua.

Lowes and Home Depot carry "paint" kits for counter tops, and they take a bit of time, but they looks fantastic. There is a choice of finishes too. For the backsplash - we used the punched tin squares - they were peel and stick things, but we went a bit further. They look great, and are easy to clean too. The come in copper and other finishes as well. Then just put a finishing edge above and below to match. Good luck.

Rustoleum makes a counter top coating system and we used it on my daughter's old laminate countertops. The results were great-looked like poured concrete. But it won't get rid of those cracks! You could easily add some trim to the top of the tile where the gap is, or just fill in with some grout or caulking. I know you probably notice it, but if its under the cabinets then its most likely not that noticeable to others.

Thanks for all the input, I found a product called Air stone, faux stone, very easy to install. I am going to do the backsplash in the gray as well as the top of walls above the wall surround around the tub. I am going to check out the rustoleum counter top system today if that does not work around, then a laminate in a black slate. I have gray tiles going on the floor. Once all is done will send along pictures.

@Janis Hill love the quiz came up with modern elegance, cottage chic and Nantucket style, pretty spot on, I try to find mid century modern pieces for the living room, found a nice seating bench to go with the pedestal table, again many thanks!

I am going for a vintage cottagy feel for the kitchen, the home was built in the 50's. The poor workmanship of tiles of granite and the former peachy backsplash did not go well in the kitchen. Two of the upper cabinets will have glass inserted. Bottom cabinets will remain white, the new floor is gray,

@Michelle can you post a picture from a distance, so I can get the overall feel of the room?

More pics would be helpful. If you're on a tight budget, a piece of wood trim will hide the raw edges at the top of the tiling. I've also seen detailed posts on this site about painting countertops.
