Chalk paint. Yes definitely paint. And add new rustic handles and hinges. You will be happy, The moulding will pop. I painted my oak kitchen cabinets. Best thing I ever did!

Remove the mirror on the inside and paint the inside a bright color. Change the hardware.

I like the idea of chalk pain and chicken wire...but after paining, while the paint is still wet you can wipe some paint away in areas with a dry brush....gives it a more aged patina...

A light grey paint would be really pretty. Once dry you could lightly sand and distress the edges for a great look.

Definitely agree with the chalk paint - milk paint works well too. To add to the suggestion of losing the mirror and painting the back, wallpaper is great in this application too and you don't even need a whole roll - so you can pick up a clearance roll or a one-off!

Would be reluctant to replace the glass with chicken wire because of the dust factor.

So glad you asked this question. I am considering changing my hutch that is close to 100 years old. It is in great shape but it needs a make over. I plan to wallpaper the inside of the back and change the hardware. I would like to paint it but I cannot envision it yet. Any recommended sites with images/pictures that might give me ideas?

I have a hutch very similar which I painted white and distressed. I reversed the doors so that the hutch remains open with the outside of the doors permanently showing. It is a beautiful piece now and doesnt have a dated look.
