Kitchen Design: What's IN What's OUT

We blogged this last year, and were interested to revisit it to see how we felt about these trends one year later. This is what the design professionals had to say, what do you say?

IN: White Cabinets, Quartz Countertops, Stone & Glass Tiles, Farmhouse Sinks

OUT: Ice Machines, Wallpaper, Granite

See what WE had to say here: http://blog.akatlanta.com/2011/11/whats-tren... (Hint: We didn't completely agree!)

love the sink (except for the fact there is no divider) and I would never consider buying a house that had wallpaper in it. I detest removing border, let alone a whole wall of paper!

Since we are currently updating our kitchen before putting our home on the market due to a transfer, I found this post interesting. Last week, we changed our counter tops to granite with tile back splash. I was glad to see you disagreed that granite is out! I'm tempted to paint the kitchen cabinets white. It sure would update them from the oak stain they now have. Do you think this would be worth the time and effort to help sell the house? We did paint our oak fireplace white and have ...»
added small rectangular stones around the opening of the fireplace. The kitchen and family room with the fireplace all flow together. We also plan to do wood flooring throughout the the downstairs. We have updated our master bath but still have the one piece unit shower. We didn't change it to tile. We covered over the wallpaper with beadboard.

@DonnaR It sounds like you're doing some very beneficial updates - hitting the universal appeal nail on the head! Granite is definitely NOT out in our opinion, and we think it adds a big boost to resale value. Kitchens are historically one of the rooms that sell homes, and you are obviously keenly aware of that! Why don't you post a picture of your kitchen, and the view from it! (IE Can you see the FP?) We'd be happy to give you a quick professional consultation via Hometalk! =) ...»

Hardwood is another fantastic idea. Sounds like your home is going to be stunning! You might not want to sell after all!

And, Becky J that's very interesting to know that you wouldn't even consider buying a home with wallpaper. You've obviously taken it down before! It certainly can be a painstaking process - we frequently do it ourselves. We still love what the right wallpaper can add to a room - pattern & texture - but if you're not a fan you can accomplish so much with painted finishes!

There is a historical house just up for sale here, in Troy, IL (IL Senator Paul Simon's old house). It is COVERED in wallpaper. lol. But, it goes with the style of house, which is Italianate.

I don't completely agree either! Some of the trends that are "in" I simply don't care for.

When we built our new home two years ago, the trend setters said that granite was no longer "in". I chose it anyway, and am enjoying it a lot. As far as color goes, I like what I like and that's what I use.

Good point, Pat aka Queen of Thrift .

When it comes right down to it, while resale is a factor to be considered for many of us, who would want to live in a house without your own personal style and unique flair? We're always interested in the trends, but more interested in our clients' personal taste!

A kitchen need to last you many, many years....why in the world would anyone go with what's "in", unless you're selling your house? We chose materials and styles that stand the test of time, and can change out things like cabinet hardware, faucet, appliances, etc., as trends change or as they wear out. It's just too big of an investment to go with the latest trend when you remodel.

Thanks AK, I will post pictures in the next day or so. The granite is very low-key. No big design, just small spots of browns, grays, whites, blacks & tans. Kind of looks like the counter top in the post picture. It will go well with white cabinets and stainless steel, white or black appliances. I think white cabinets are timeless. We had planned on painting them for ourselves but now with the move and so much else to do, I'm not sure. We built our home 14 years ago. We had blue Formica in ...»
the kitchen, blue island, blue crown molding on top of the cabinets. Also blue tile around oak fireplace. So everything was oak and blue and you see the need for updating! I would absolutely appreciate your input! Again, will post pictures soon. Thanks so much.

Donna, your granite description sounds like what we chose. We had white cabinets in prior home, but this time I went with a Behr color, "Baked Scone". Our cabinet builder said that his paint supplier could match any color, and it turned out perfectly. In fact, I have a small china hutch that I brought with me to the new house, and I repainted it to match the "Baked Scone" cabinets. It was right on! I have stainless appliances, and a ceramic cooktop which is black. My sink is the brown ...»
granite composite. My walls are Behr "Green Fig", the ceilings throughout the house are Behr "Swiss Coffee", and all the trim is Bright White semi gloss! Everyone that has seen it really likes it.....and I love the combination. I think white cabinets are beautiful, but I guess after having them for a long time, I wanted a change without going dark. I'm not sharing this to compete with anyone....just agreeing with AK that personal taste and style is the bottom line in making a house a home!

I had to laugh that ice makers are out! WHAT! We bought one that sits on our counter top during the summer and absolutely LOVE , LOVE, LOVE IT!!! We fill up the tray in the freezer--which seems to be about empty all the time--freeze enough to to fill a couple of large zip lock bags for the big freezer and stow it away until next time. I would install one under the counter except it would be too expensive a project. Were I redoing my kitchen, we would definitely have one!!! Just can't survive without plenty of ice in the south!

Pat, sounds like a beautiful combo!

We wonder, too, Jeanette, what they think is the "IN" way to make ice?!

Jeanette, obviously the person who said that "ice makers are out" doesn't live in the South!

Pat: Thanks for posting your paint colors. I had been trying to think of a color I'd used in the past as a base color when faux painting. Guess what? It's Swiss Coffee. Thanks!

I'm sorry, I must be a hick..what in the world does an ice maker have to do with the looks and usefulness of a kitchen? People, or critics, look in our refrigerators and say...oh my, this is sooo tacky, an ice maker, then she fans her face with shock and embarrassment?huh? Am i am idjit to not know this?

Going for a timeless look and one that works best for you and the feel of your home is a definite must! However there are several things that the modern homeowners demands from their kitchen that differ from just fads and trends:

    - Large, double sinks

    - A range with several burners and a big over - not only stylish and practical, but also ...»

creates a real homey traditional feel

    - Primary colors! Homeowners are becoming more bold in their choices for kitchens. Blocks of red and blue are popular, but if you want to be more traditional than a rustic farmhouse look never fails!

I bet they mean the type of ice maker visible or accessible on the outside of a refrigerator door. I certainly couldn't live without my ice maker. However, I have a french door fridge and the ice maker is inside the freezer drawer.

whats in and whats out every season is for folks with a lot of money..i am redoing a small 1927 house with a small galley kitchen, and i think people should stick to their own personal taste. i know some people won't be living in their house forever, but while your there you should be happy with how you have decorated. i live up north, and personally if i could afford it i would have a fridge with an ice maker,
