I've seen area rugs over carpet and it doesn't look bad. The only thing I would worry about is if it was a tripping hazard.

Of course.. I have used a large area rug under my bed on top of white wall to wall carperting to add warmth to the room. Try using one at an angle to give the room an updated look.

Absolutely. With right color contrast can look outstanding!

Try Velcro - that might help it stay put. Having said that we have one over carpet in our lounge and it does tend to ruck up a bit. We have the coffee table sitting on it and having to pull the rug straight now and again. Maybe I should try my own suggestion! LOL!
  • Absolutely you can put area rug over carpet. Layers add interest to a room. It anchors the floor and can add color which adds visual interest. Make sure it is big enough.
  • It should not be a tripping hazard. Put a waffle pad under the rug. This is very good design.
  • One of the best painted rugs is a piece of sheet vinyl. Prime the piece and go to town. Base coat with back ground color then stencil or hand paint a design. Finish it with 3 coats of clear to coat. This is very durable. You can ask flooring stores for a remnant and cut it any size you want. Very cost effective.
  • Make sure your rug is large enough. In a dining room, the rug should be large enough when you pull the chairs out to sit, they are still completely on the rug.
  • In family room, it should almost fill the space of the sitting area leaving an area of flooring of about 4-10 inches visable.

Until I pulled up my carpets, I had a large area rug in each room. The rugs were so bad until I pulled them up. Wow, beautiful oak floors under those nasty carpets. Love the floor.

Yes, you can do anything you want. I would suggest a carpet pad under it though; it will prevent your wall to wall carpet from getting worn spots.
